Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Quiet street, end of 'cul de sac,' with sidewalks for walking. Very safe, secure and calm family neighborhood.

Ten minute walk to San Carlos downtown, a charming European-style village with weekly farmer's street market, many outdoor cafes, numerous parks, a wonderful public library, and quirky, artistic shops. Int'l restaurants--French, Italian, Burmese, Korean, Mediterranean, Indian, Creole, BBQ, Hawaiian, steakhouses, seafood, Peruvian, Greek, etc. (See yelp.com for more.)

Serene suburban escape, but very close to San Francisco and Palo Alto, Stanford University. Easy car access to 2 freeways. 10 min. walk to train depot or express bus to San Fran, Stanford, etc w/transfer to BART subway system

Best weather in Bay Area---Lovely all year. Summers of warm sunshine, cooling breezes most every day even when San Francisco is cold & foggy and Berkeley/East Bay and San Jose/Silicon Valley are hot. Beautiful in Spring, but winter rains and storms are lovely to watch from wall of windows! Sept./Oct ideal for San Francisco--almost no fog or rain.

Close in town are many parks, hiking nature areas, an airplane/helicopter museum. Major shopping malls close. Nearby (15 min.to 1 hour by auto) are wonderful forests, bay & ocean beaches.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Iconic landmarks, cultural, outdoor, and sightseeing activities to keep busy having fun every day for months!

SAN FRANCISCO ENVIRONS: I provide tailored, detailed tourist information & travel books about San Francisco and all adjacent areas, such as Berkeley, Oakland, Palo Alto, Silicon Valley & other Bay Area cities.

IN & AROUND MY TOWN: I'm located on the "Peninsula," the area between San Francisco and San Jose bounded on one side by the Bay and the other by coastal hills and the Ocean. There are many recreational opportunities within a short distance--on the Bay beaches, boat & kayak rentals, wind surfing, stand up boards and miles and miles of trails in forests, meadows, shoreline, numerous Pacific Ocean beaches and tide pools.

In my town alone there are a dozen public parks and parkletts (some are playgrounds, others natural preserves), 3 wineries, 3 craft breweries for beer, and one for cider (one hosts Beer Garden Fridays, family & dog friendly event with music, food trucks and outdoor picnic tables), a small plane airport and museum, a trampoline park, and a jazz club. In the summer San Carlos hosts Movies in the Park and Friday night Concerts in the Park.

In neighboring Peninsula towns there are 2 live theaters, several multi-plex cinemas, a number of music clubs, a hands on science museum for kids, the headquarter campuses for Oracle and Facebook. Street festivals abound every weekend in the summer. Stanford University is also accessible close-by with its 2 first class art museums free of admission), sculpture gardens, and architectural gems, as well as the world class Stanford University Medical Center.

CLOSE-BY DAY AND OVERNIGHT TRIPS: Convenient for day trips to many tourist areas, such as Santa Cruz beach resort, Napa wine country, the Monterey and the Carmel area, dramatic Pacific Ocean coast towns. Overnights are are best in Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, Big Sur, and the historical 19th Century Gold Rush mining towns, all within about 1/2 day drive. Of course, for those who are intrepid (and brave freeway drivers!), Los Angeles is 6-7 hours--just avoid rush hour times!

TRANSPORTATION: Easy drive (about 1/2 hour at non commute times) to San Francisco. Because there are two different freeways and no bridges to cross (like from Berkeley or Marin county), you will have fewer traffic problems, no expensive bridge toll costs and easier driving than from many towns. But we have become a more congested metropolitan hub, so there is traffic to deal with!

Regular and Express train service north to San Francisco, to the BART Millbrae station for the City or Berkeley and train service south to Palo Alto (Stanford)

Fifteen minute drive to San Francisco Int'l Airport or take public bus transport available from 3-5 blocks away.

2nd Home in Ashland, Oregon (3 bdr., 2 bath) located on Oregon/California border--artistic town with many cultural events/activities and close-by access to miles of forest hiking trails: river rafting, kayaking within day trip range. If interested, can send more info and pictures.
