Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our house is located in a quiet cul-de-sac just 10 minute's walk from the center of Colinton Village. It is in a residential area with lots of good places to walk. There are two Italian restaurants in the village as well as a mini supermarket, post office/delicatessen, coffee shop, pharmacy, two pubs and an art gallery.

We are a 10-minute walk away from The Water of Leith Walkway which takes you all the way down to the sea, past lots of interesting places such as Dean Village and the Modern Art Galleries. If you go in the opposite direction, the Walkway will take you up to the Pentland hills.

We are also only a 15-minute walk away from the Union Canal. This will take you all the way into the center of Edinburgh either on foot or by bike. In the opposite direction, it will take you all the way to The Falkirk Wheel and on to Glasgow via the Clyde canal!

Colinton Village sits at the foot of the Pentland hills which have endless possibilities for walks, both long and short.

We are within a few minute's walk of Craiglockart Hill which is actually two hills but counts as one of the seven hills of Edinburgh (along with Arthur’s Seat, Blackford Hill, Corstorphine Hill, The Braids, Castle mount, and Calton Hill- Each of these hills is within easy reach of our house by bike, car or bus and have incredible views of the city and beyond).

The village itself has an interesting history and was home to the famous writer, Robert Louis Stevenson (author of Treasure Island). The community council takes pride in preserving the character of the village and it is very well maintained. Over the past few years, several memorials to Robert Louis Stephenson have been commissioned and situated around the village creating a fascinating trail.

We are also home to the now famous Colinton Tunnel Mural stunning artwork representing a poem by RLS and claimed to be Europe’s longest mural. http://www.colintontunnel.org.uk/

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

There is literally everything you would want in Edinburgh and, because of its relatively small size, it is possible to get around the city quite quickly. The local transport is excellent with buses running every few minutes. We are on the bus route to most of Edinburgh including the fantastic 400 service to the airport.
