Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our neighbourhood is in the old port of Ghent, in the North of the city with a charm of it's own near the canal waterside. It is a quiet hood developing towards trendy, with some ethnical-mixed population, but without problems. Distance to the city center is 1km. Bikes available. Good bus and tram connections. Tram 4 will take you to the centre and the train station (St Pieters). Bus 6 is just around the corner and will take you to the other train station (Dampoort) and the tram stop at Muidebrug.
Good train and road connections with the rest of Belgium, Netherlands and France. Amsterdam 220 km, Paris 300 km. About 80 km from the Belgian and Dutch coasts. Gent will enchant lovers of old cities, of contemporary art, old art, jazz, theatre, excellent restaurants, terrace to wine and fine, views and beer.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Gent is a very attractive pocket-size metropolis. You"ll find a medieval city center, canals, cinema's, restaurants, cafés, art venues, shop till you drop possibilities...
It offers a unique combination of authenticity, creativity and natural local flair. What’s more, it’s a human-scaled city in the heart of Flanders with added value thanks to its many waterways.

What makes Ghent unique?
First of all its excellent location. And of course The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, the tryptych by the Van Eyck brothers that is displayed at St Bavo’s Cathedral. Moreover, Ghent is the only city with a lighting plan, which illuminates the streets and buildings at night, showcasing them from a different angle. Ghent is also the festival city of Flanders, boasting the largest outdoor city festival in Europe (july). Jazz lovers will love the jazz festival the first two weeks of jury. And if you’re a fan of flowers, you’ll undoubtedly know that Ghent hosts a highly prestigious flower exhibition, the Floralies (april). Which city has a real castle in its city centre? Which city came up first or second or third in all kinds of travel magazines on a worldwide basis?

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We are careful people. We will respect your house. We've been exchanging a lot from 1997 > 2004 to London, Sussex countryside, Rome (2x) Firenze, Berlin (x2) and Paris. We re-entered the HomeLink program when our kids left home in 2015. We changed with Londoners and fine people from the south of France in 2016. Please check our exchange preferences below and one over here. One important item related to house-and city-rules: garbage separation is mandatory in the city of Ghent. However the lofthouse has garbage collection facilities.
