Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

VICTORIAN TOWNHOUSE PLUS COTTAGE IN THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS.

Our main home is a Victorian town house on four levels dating from the 1870s and is situated in a quiet tree-lined street 15 minutes walk from the centre of Aberdeen. It is very comfortable and fully modernised, with central heating, widescreen TV, DVD, PC (with Broadband), hi-fi system, microwave and all the other usual domestic appliances.
The ground floor has an office, dining room and drawing room with piano. In the basement are an open-plan kitchen, dining-area and sitting room, with direct access to enclosed back garden. There is a pantry and utility-room with freezer and washing machine. The top two floors have five bedrooms and a study.
In addition we share a cottage in Glenlivet with two families. This will available to exchange partners one week in three. It has mains electricity. We installed a new kitchen last year, with dishwasher, fridge, ceramic hob etc. On the ground floor there is an entry vestibule/cloakroom, dining room, sitting room and a front 'garden room'. There is a bathroom with underfloor heating, electric shower and washing machine/tumble dryer. On the upper floor are two double bedrooms plus a very small single bedroom.
All rooms have electric panel heaters. There is a coal/wood burner in the dining room and an open grate in the living room. There are plenty of books and board games. One of the barns has a games room with table tennis, table football and darts. (There is a telephone landline but no TV, mobile phone or Internet access - tech detox!)

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Ferryhill lies just south of Aberdeen city centre. The area is quiet yet is only 15 minutes' walk from the shops, restaurants and other city centre attractions. The main rail station is also within a 15 minute walk. The train ride to Edinburgh takes two and a half hours; Glasgow can be reached in three hours. There is an acclaimed municipal park (Duthie Park) situated 10 minutes' walk from the house. The beach esplanade in Aberdeen stretches for two miles - excellent for bracing walks!
Aberdeen has a full range of art galleries and museums (https://www.visitscotland.com/destinations-maps/aberdeen-city-shire/). There are excellent restaurants and bars. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and easily accessible from our home. There are castles and stately homes, formal gardens, long, empty beaches and lonely mountains.
Our cottage lies in the heart of Speyside malt whisky country. The cottage is an excellent base for exploring the Cairngorm Mountains, Royal Deeside and Moray. Glenlivet is a designated 'dark sky' so excellent for stargazing and astrophotography.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Aberdeen is an vibrant, prosperous city with excellent shopping and a wide range of restaurants, bars and nightlife. There is a two mile long beach esplanade. The coastline has many quaint fishing villages. There is a wealth of outdoor activities in the surrounding countryside including championship golf courses, hill walking, mountain biking and fishing.
Our second home (shared with two other families) dates from the early 1800s. It sits alone on a hillside overlooking Glenlivet. (See https://www.glenlivetestate.co.uk). To the rear of the cottage, the ground slopes up to an area of open heather moorland which affords safe walking and magnificent views to the Cairngorm Mountains to the south and the Moray coast to the north. The cottage is an excellent base for touring the surrounding area. The many whisky distilleries offer guided tours and restaurants. Glenlivet lies in the 'rain shadow' of Cairngorm. As a result the rainfall is low and around the same as SE England.
