Glenn and I are each retired (chemical engineer and educator) and we both enjoy travel. We have a genuine interest in meeting people, learning about other cultures, seeing new things. We are avid art gallery and museum visitors, and are wine/vineyard enthusiasts. We enjoy biking and moderate hiking. Glenn enjoys running, and has completed more than 25 marathons. I am learning to throw pottery on a wheel and am active in the local art community in Wimberley.
We love to say YES to exchanging. Whether or not we’ve listed your location specifically in our upcoming plans, if you’re interested in visiting this part of the world we hope you’ll ask.
Our home in Humble Texas just north of Houston and our cabin in Wimberley Texas just south of Austin are about 3.5 hour drive apart and provide very different Texas experiences. The drive between them has several interesting stops including the Painted Churches of Texas in and around Shulenburg, the Texas Wendish Heritage Museum in Giddings, Berdoll's Pecan and Candy store featuring the "Pearl the Squirrel" landmark, and the Blue Bell Ice Cream Creamery in Brenham. (those last two are definitely the most delicious stops to make en route)

Description of the home we are offering for exchange
This "Little Cabin in the Woods" is a house of 2s. 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 living areas, 2 sheds on 2 acres. One of the sheds has been converted to a workshop/art studio.
Both the cabin and the workshop have reliable wifi w/high-speed internet provided by Spry. The link below gives more details. You can read about our current service plan by looking up their Residential EXTREME package. https://sprynext.com/pricing-residential/
You enter the home to a cozy, fireside living room. There is a ground floor bedroom and stairs to the upstairs open bedroom. The ground floor bedroom has a queen bed, an ensuite with walk-in shower and the laundry closet. The upstairs bedroom has a queen bed and two twin beds. There is an en suite with tub/shower and large vanity.
To the right of the downstairs living room there is a galley kitchen. The kitchen opens onto the family room with space for living and dining.
The porch is another great space for living and dining. When we recently had the cabin repainted we also had four ceiling fans installed on the porch making it a pleasant place to relax even on the warmest days. On the rest of the property you'll find a grill, a firepit, and multiple outdoor dining spaces. There is a hammock for two and a saucer swing that's not just for children.
The workshop/studio has an easel and two work tables.
The shed has plenty of outdoor games as well as birdseed and deer food so you can enjoy their company as you visit.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Wimberley is an artists' community just south of Austin in the beauty of Texas hill country. We are at the top of a hill, surrounded by trees. Although we are less than 5 miles from the heart of Wimberley, and just 30 miles from Austin, the neighborhood around the cabin is rural. Every home sits on 2 acres or more of heavily treed property. Deer and other wildlife abound. Nearby open spaces and rivers provide opportunities to hike, swim, and raft. The stars at night really are big and bright; Wimberley is one of only three Texas communities recognized by the International Dark Sky Association. Much of the year at sunset you can enjoy watching the bats emerge from their roosts under the bridge over Cypress Creek in our town square. Wimberley is known for its galleries, boutiques, wine tasting rooms, and unique restaurants. Here's a great link for more information https://wimberley.org/visit/
Make the short drive to Austin to experience world-class museums, music venues, golf courses, restaurants, theater, and more. Or, take the slightly longer, scenic drive to explore San Antonio's Riverwalk, the Alamo, El Mercado, and if you’re visiting early in the year, the amazing San Antonio Rodeo. Venture through the heart of Texas wine country with a visit to Fredericksburg.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
For outdoor enthusiasts, hike up nearby Mount Baldy, or make the drive to Enchanted Rock, hiking to the top enjoying views as you go. Rent a kayak or canoe for white water rafting on the Guadalupe River, or hop in a tube at other spots for a relaxing float. Swim in Wimberley's famous natural swimming holes, Blue Hole and Jacob's Well, or go boating on nearby Canyon Lake, or Austin's Town Lake. Stop in Austin to rent bikes; there's much to explore on two wheels.
Golfers have a large number of beautiful hill country courses available. Check out Vaaler Creek in Blanco, Fazio Canyons in Austin, Lady Bird in Fredericksburg, La Cantera in San Antonio, or one of the many other courses out our way. Tennis players may enjoy the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in nearby New Braunfels.
Wine lovers can explore many vineyards and wineries along the Texas Wine Route, beginning in Wimberley. There are a variety of other farms and tasting rooms to explore including those producing olive oil, whiskey, and rum. There's a family chocolatier sharing products from their Venezuelan cocoa plantation.
Dining options in Wimberley vary from established cafés and restaurants, to food trucks and newer trendy restaurants. Head to Austin for the many great cuisine options, or San Antonio for authentic TexMex.
For art enthusiasts, Wimberley is home to some lovely galleries. Many offer workshops and classes for those inspired to create some art of their own. Silo Glass is a lovely shop to visit, and offers glass fusing classes that allow even beginners to create something wonderful. Austin and San Antonio have a wide range of fantastic galleries. Art museums, like the Blanton in Austin or the McNay in San Antonio, are also well worth an art-lover's time.
Music lovers and musicians alike come to hill country, where live music is available somewhere in town nightly. Gruene Hall, Texas's oldest dance hall, has a great slate of musicians, Austin's legendary 6th Street is always hopping, or explore some of the smaller venues where you'll hear everything from blues to country to jazz to rock.
Want to relax? Sit on the front porch and welcome the visiting deer, hummingbirds, migrating flocks of robins (when you hear hundreds of robins singing at once, it's the most amazing chorus!), and the occasional fox.
Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules
We will leave our home neat and tidy for you, and hope to find it in the same condition upon our return. Thank you.
