Description of the home we are offering for exchange
Have you ever wondered where all those aunts and uncles (& sometimes even grandparents) emigrated to in the later 19th Century? We welcome you to join us as your hosts (May through October) for an introduction to a part of the US that is rarely visited by Transatlantic visitors, perhaps after exchange time in our suburban Washington, DC home. Settled by Swedes, Norwegians, Germans, Welsh & Irish, as well as a good few from the greater "Austro-Hungarian Empire", our little towns reflect these heritages in the traditions carried on to this day. Our home, just off a good recreational lake (fishing, swimming & boating), offers guests private amenities on the lower level of the house - two bedrooms, bath, great room with comfortable seating, as well as our main-floor living/dining spaces, outdoor deck and large garden.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Our village (pop. 1000) is typical of this area of Minnesota. Three bar/restaurants, a hardware store, wine/beer shop and tiny "gas & go" grocer provide needed amenities to residents as well as summer "lake" people - who enjoy our parks and lakes. Nearby Mankato is the shopping hub of a large area in this South-Central part of the State. Just over an hour from Minnesota's "Twin Cities" of Minneapolis & St. Paul, it's an easy, quick drive to explore the many historic & fine arts museums & galleries. Around us are towns like New Ulm - with it's historic Schell's brewery, New Prague and it's stately St. Wenceslas church, Nicolett County with it's deep Swedish & Norwegian roots part of every town and village, including St. Peter's Gustavus Adolphus College. Heritage plays a big part of life in these small towns, where every summer weekend fairs, festivals, parades, and farmer's markets can be found within an hour's drive of our home.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Hiking & biking enthusiasts may enjoy the Sakatah Trail - a nearly 50-mile trail that links nearby Mankato with the city of Faribault. This old rail line (paved), passes a half-dozen villages, lakes and innumerable farm fields and pastures. Lots of places to stop for a break - or even a swim - a drink, and ice cream, or even a cup of tea with freshly-baked pastries! Rentals of boats, paddleboards, wind-surfing boards and kayaks are available locally - and river-kayaking groups are formed regularly forhalf-day trips on nearby Minnesota & Watonwan Rivers.
Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules
We'll help plan your days out - and welcome you back before OR after dinner each day...
