Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Robin Hoods Bay is a beautiful, unspoilt fishing village close to Whitby. Scarborough and York are also close by. There are many areas of interest, some of which have been featured in popular fiction books and TV series eg James Herriot (Thirsk), Heartbeat (Goathland and Whitby), Brideshead Revisited (Castle Howard) and Last of the Summer Wine (Holmfirth, West Yorkshire). This is also Captain Cook country, as he grew up around here and set sail from this area on his seafaring voyages.
Robin Hoods Bay is on the Cleveland Way, a trail that follows the coastline and the Coast to Coast across from the Lake District. More leisurely walking and cycling can be done along the disused railway line which has beautiful coastal views. Robin Hoods Bay is in the North York Moors National Park and within easy reach of Dalby Forest. Boat trips can be taken from Whitby and Scarborough.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Within an hour's drive are many historical and cultural places of interest. There is York with its Minster and medieval walls, Pickering Castle, Castle Howard, Rievaulx and Fountains Abbeys, too many to mention.
There are six pubs within a mile or so of the house, many of which serve food. This is in addition to local restaurants, cafes and a fish and chip shop. You will not go hungry! Also a post office, convenience stores and a butcher. Gift shops, second hand book shops and two amazing sweetshops complete the picture. There is a small museum of local life, a National Trust visitor centre, regular exhibitions in the Village Hall and an occasional cinema.
As well as the beach at Robin Hoods Bay there are others at Sandsend, Whitby, Runswick Bay, Scarborough, Cayton and Filey. A steam railway runs from nearby Goathland to Pickering. Youngsters will love rockpooling but also the Flamingoland Theme Park, Go Ape at Dalby and ice cream at Beacon Farm.
