We are a retired couple (I am Australian but have lived more of my life in Scotland than in Oz) and my wife is Scottish. We both used to work in the public service. I was Director of IT for the Scottish Courts and Sandra was Deputy Director of the International Office at the University of Edinburgh. We live in a town about 7 miles outside central Edinburgh and love travelling, walking, gardening and going to the theatre/concerts/art galleries etc. We both are learning languages - I do Italian and Sandra is learning French. I enjoy painting, drawing and wood carving. We both dance badly (Scottish Country dancing and ballroom)! We have 2 grown up children and a dog.

Description of the home we are offering for exchange
A lovely family home in a renovated Georgian house in the market town of Dalkeith. Regular public buses pass the house and take 40 minutes to reach central Edinburgh. There is also a station on the other side of the town which takes you in to Edinburgh or down to the Borders. The house consists of (downstairs): an open plan kitchen/dining area, a sitting room with log burning stove, a conservatory, a large garden room with bi-folding doors allowing the garden to become part of the house (but warm and snug in winter), a large shower room and a utility area; and upstairs (1st floor), 3 double bedrooms, a bathroom (bath with shower over), a playroom (extra sitting area) with steep steps (so not suitable for those with mobility restrictions) leading to the attic bedroom. There are extensive gardens around the property with views to the River Esk.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
The town of Dalkeith is an old market town whose High Street retains a number of historic buildings (though there are also some typical 1960s buildings!). There are a range of shops (pharmacies, banks, hairdressers, butchers etc) as well as two supermarkets all within easy walking distance. There are some excellent walks from the front door. Dalkeith Palace and Country Park is a 5 minute walk with a large adventure playground, boutique shops, cafe and restaurant. The local golfcourse is about 100 to 200m away.
