We're a family of four who love being outdoors. Katherine is a teacher and Colin a civil servant. Lachlan is 10 years old and likes playing outside, cycling and Lego. Isla Mari is seven and loves crafts, playing games and rock climbing. Before meeting in 2000, Colin and Katherine had different adventures living abroad. Katherine in Switzerland and France; Colin in Ireland, the Netherlands and Japan where he lived for three years. We moved to East Linton in 2014, and feel incredibly lucky to live in this beautiful corner of the world. We enjoy walking, cycling, yoga, cooking and eating, listening to music and board games. We did our first home exchange to Germany two years ago - it was such a great experience that we would like to do more!

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Our home is located in the charming village of East Linton which is set amidst open farmland with the dramatic backdrop of Traprain law visible from the spare bedroom (and walkable from the house). East Linton has a range of shops including a convenience store, craft baker, post office, farm shop and gallery, a pharmacy, an excellent butcher, a sweet shop and café and two traditional pubs serving food. The wider county of East Lothian is worth a visit in its own right. It boasts over 40 miles of stunning coastline, golden beaches, rolling countryside, historic towns and villages, varied attractions and the world’s finest links golf courses. See www.visiteastlothian.org/home for more details. Edinburgh, Scotland’s cosmopolitan and historical capital, is just 23 miles away and within easy reach by bus. The nearest bus stop with regular services to Edinburgh and Berwick-upon-Tweed is a five-minute walk from our house. We are within five miles of train stations at Drem and Dunbar which boast regular services both west into Edinburgh and south along the east coast mainline to London. See www.visitscotland.com/destinations-maps/edinburgh-lothians/ for more details.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Our favourite family walks from our home include a riverside walk up to the ruins of Hailes Castle, or a meander through the village and local farm land to the Scottish National Trust owned Preston Mill and Phantassie Doocot. Tea and scones at nearby Smeaton nursery are a delight. Our favourite beaches include Seacliffe which boasts dramatic views of Tantallon Castle and the northern hemisphere’s most important gannet colony, Bass Rock and Ravensheugh beach which also has magnificent views of bass rock. If you are fascinated by Scotland’s history, the iron age fort at the top of Traprain Law is a must, as are the medieval strongholds of Tantallon, Hailes and Dirlton castles. There is walking aplenty in East Lothian, the John Muir Way takes in much of the region’s coastline, and the Southern Upland Way is also easily accessible. Day trips from Scotland’s national Seabird Centre in North Berwick are available to the gannet colony at Bass rock and other islands in the forth estuary. Other fun family activities nearby include East Links family park and Foxlake adventures. Miles of beautiful coastline provides a playground for water sports activities, from surfing in Dunbar to sailing in North Berwick. Walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding and golf are also easily available. See http://www.visiteastlothian.org/home for more details. Edinburgh is 23 miles away and has a fantastic range of cultural and family attractions to suit all ages and tastes.
