Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our neighborhood does not have an imaginative or evocative name--it is called the "West Avenue Neighborhood"-- but it is a convenient and attractive area on the west side of South Beach, between the Art Deco District and Biscayne Bay. The neighborhood consists of large condominium and rental apartment buildings on the waterfront (with a public BayWalk directly on the water) and a mix of smaller residential and commercial buildings, some of them Art Deco gems, in the inland blocks. Although there are some hotels, the West Avenue Neighborhood is primarily an urban residential neighborhood with pedestrian convenience. The apartment is within 10 minutes walk of 3 supermarkets, two pharmacies, several theaters, and many restaurants, as well as theaters (movies and live entertainment) and nightlife venues (discos and bars).

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

The apartment is less than 20 minutes walk from the beach itself, Lincoln Road Mall, Ocean Drive, South Pointe Park, the Convention Center, the museums of South Beach (Wolfsonian Museum, Bass Art Museum, Florida Jewish Museum, World Erotic Art Museum), the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, and several theaters (New World Symphony, Colony Theater, Theater O, Regal Theaters Lincoln Center). Across Biscayne Bay (less than 20 minutes drive or Uber/Lyft ride, or a 30-45 minute ride on an electric bike) are the attractions of the City of Miami: Downtown Miami (including Miami Central Station, with trains to Ft Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando); the Miami River and Brickell neighborhood (Brickell City Center mall; the Underline; nightlife); Wynwood (artsy area known for murals and nightlife); Edgewater (the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts); the Design District (luxury-brand shopping in an architecturally-extravagant setting), an array of museums (Perez Art Museum Miami, Rubell Museum, Miami History Museum, Frost Science Museum, etc.), and so forth. Other major attractions such as Calle Ocho (Little Havana), Vizcaya, the Miami Seaquarium, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens, the Ancient Spanish Monastery, Bill Braggs State Park, Marlins Stadium, the Orange Bowl, and so forth, are more like 30-45 minutes drive or ride.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

CAR DEPENDENCY: Please note that, with the exception of trips to National Parks/wilderness vacations, or extremely scenic rural areas (for example, Umbria, Napa Valley, or the Big Island of Hawai'i) we do not take vacations in which driving a car is obligatory. We never stay in suburban locales. This is not a judgment on how nice suburban houses or people are. It's just that we do not generally find driving to be relaxing, freeing, or enlightening.
CHILDREN: Allowed, but for their sakes and ours, they must be calm and behaved, and not more than 1 child (or possibly two small children who sleep together). Our apartment is not "child-proof": there are sharp edges and fragile objects.
CAT ALLERGY: One of us is highly allergic to cats. We're sorry, but if you have a cat, or have had a cat in the past 25 years, we cannot exchange. Dogs are somewhat better but can still be a problem.
