Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

Our house has been build in 1740 in the "new part" of the town. It is a two-house complex which has been combined as one family house with small garden & terrace in UNESCO city. We restored the house in the early nineties. The ground floor area is mainly taken by a separate flat, however there is a summer kitchen with access to the small garden in the groundfloor. Being an old house, it stays quite cool in summer times. The garden offers shade and quite a cool climate, we would eat outside in summerevening (garden or terrace). In winter we usually heat and cook with the two ovens on the upper floor level, however a gas-stove and central heating is also available. Each level, ground floor, first floor and roof have ovens to heat with wood, if desired. The house as many rooms to sit, read, listen to music or get lost in conversations.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

We live in the "new part" of town constructed in 1700-1800, on a quiet, green churchyard with close to no traffic (residents only). Being nevertheless in the centre of town, nothing is far and we highly recommend walking within the city (10 minutes to main square, market, and pedestrian area with shops, 2 minutes to swimming hall, 1 minute organic food store, 15 minutes to the castle and main parks).

Since this is the former Eastern part of germany, some UNIQUE SHOPS have survived the 20 years of modernization and are like a time bubble. We highly appreciate our retail shops kept by families in several generations.

However being the eastern zone of germany you will realize that COST FOR FOOD, CULTURE, MUSEUM ENTRIES, ACTIVITIVIES ETC ARE SUPRISINGLY MODEST.

OUr town centre and nearby cities like Wernigerode and Blankenburg are attractions close by, for nature friends, the Harz mountains are about 20 minutes by car for hiking, climbing, kid activities, cross country skiing etc., the Brocken (highest mountain, where the devil and witches are dancing during Walpurgis night) is a perfect hiking area, and connected to Quedlinburg through an historic steam railway, leaving from our station.

We have many castles and monasteries in our region and will leave the brochures upon your arrival.

Bigger cities and distance by car: Berlin centre (2,5 hours), Weimar, place of Goethe and Schilller, German romanticism and Buchenwald (2h), Leipzig and Halle, the cities of Bach, good for shopping, close by wine-region(1,5h), Dresden, beautifully rebuild after WWII destruction, capitol of Saxony (2h), Hannover (1,5h), Prague (3,5h)
