Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our holiday home 'Cottage Pie' is located in Belvidere Estate an established residential community of about 200 homes built in a parkland environment on the shores of the Knysna lagoon. Attractive features of Belvidere (https://www.belvidere.co.za) include it's pretty gardens, sailing jetties, tennis courts, Belvidere Manor (a lovely residential hotel), Holy Trinity Church (a small Norman-style church consecrated in 1855) and the 'Bell pub' (a popular classic).
The nearby town of Knysna (https://www.visitknysna.co.za) is a popular destination for tourists with its year-round warm climate and many attractions. It hosts a variety of festivals and events during the year including the well known oyster festival in June/July. It is a popular golfing destination boasting several world class courses (Pezula, Simola, Knysna). The viewpoint at the famous 'Knysna Heads' gives spectacular sightings of the ocean and lagoon as flow through the 'Heads' is reversed with changing of the tides. The forests surrounding the town are dotted with walks and trails and the rivers, lagoon and beaches nearby offer swimming, kayaking and fishing opportunities. Knysna is a 6-hour drive from Cape Town or can be reached by air flying into the nearby towns of George or Plettenberg Bay.
Regionally, Knysna is a mid-point along the famous Garden Route (www.gardenroute.co.za), a 300km stretch of coast stretching from Mossel Bay to Storms River, the latter so named because of its diverse vegetation, numerous lakes and stunning beaches.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

A car is a necessity staying in Belvidere and our holiday car (Toyota Tazz) is potentially available for use. We do all our shopping in nearby Knysna which offers a full and varied shopping experience and has many cafes and restaurants catering for all tastes. However in Belvidere, a short walk from the house, you can have an excellent meal and a 'pint' at the Bell Tavern adjacent to Belvidere Manor. The 'Waterfront' and 'Thesen Island' are developments in Knysna that have many 'boutique' style shops and a variety of cafes/restaurants set around the harbour and its connecting canals.
Pleasant excursions on a Saturday morning can be made to the morning markets at Sedgefield ( 25 km away) and Plettenberg Bay (30 km away). On Friday evenings in Knysna there is an evening market where you can choose supper from a number of different food stalls and be entertained by local musicians. There are no cinemas but often concerts are held in local halls.
The coastline along the Garden Route is stunning and there are many lovely beaches for swimming. Buffalo Bay, Victoria Bay, the Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay and Nature's Valley are great examples within reasonably short driving distance from Belvidere. Brenton beach is closest and offers a spectacular walk along the cliffs. There is a lovely 6km beach walk to be taken at low tide starting from Brenton and ending at Buffalo Bay.
A day trip to Plettenberg Bay is a must. The beaches are lovely and safe and the small town has some interesting shops and restaurants. June to September is whale watching season and whale sightings are common at Plettenberg Bay and along the coastline to the Wilderness. A short drive beyond "Plett" it is possible to visit Monkeyland and a fascinating Bird Park. A little further out is Keeurboom Strand, which has a small pretty beach and where "Enrico's" offers lunch in a spectacular setting.
Regionally, a day trip can be taken to the town of Oudtshoorn, which is famous for its ostrich farms and the journey through the Cango Caves, a 20 million year old network of limestone chambers.
Many other attractions exist in the Garden Route and are best discovered by searching the internet (https://www.garden-route.co.za).

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We will make sure that the house is in good order when guests arrive and we would expect the house to be in similar good order when guests leave. We will arrange for all bedding and towels to be washed after departure so no need for guests to do this. We have a weekly garden service on Tuesdays. We have a swimming pool and this is normally covered when we are not there. However depending on season and circumstance we can possibly make the pool available for guests.
The house has an electronic alarm system fitted and we will advise the simple entry and exit procedures to the guest.
The house is not available in December and January as this is our 'family time' but should be available outside these months for stays of one to three weeks.
