Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

We have been holidaying with our family in our delightful upside-down seaview flat for over 30 years,.
The flat has wonderful views over the sea and over the rooftops of this beautiful town. It is not glossy magazine chic, but is charming, comfortable, centrally heated, very well furnished and decorated- and as part of a well- maintained 150 year old building has with some quirks and creaks of its own!
The 2nd floor kitchen is very well equipped and full of light and a lovely space to sit and eat. Warm evenings on the south and west facing balcony are a delight! The comfortable 2nd floor living/ TV room looks east over the sea, with a living flame gas fire for extra cosiness and wonderful views over the sea- a fantastic retreat in stormy winter weather!
The flat sleeps up to 5 - a double bed in the 1st floor front room, 2 generous singles in the back room, (plus a good fold away single bed hidden away in a cupboard in the upstairs living room). There is a 1st floor bathroom with bath, overbath shower and toilet, and a second toilet with wash basin.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Southwold is a delightful old fashioned and well - preserved town with a thriving high street full of a variety of intriguing small shops, galleries, pubs and restaurants. It is also home to the traditional Adnams brewery, the Electric Cinema, (a unique tiny retro cinema squeezed into a converted ropehouse), one of the best piers in the country, a magnificent 15C church and beautiful open spaces or greens within the town.
It is regularly featured in the UK press as one of the country's most attractive but unspoilt seaside towns, and is ranked by Which? magazine in 2020 as the 3rd best coastal town in the country.
The flat is in a fantastic and central location immediately overlooking the sea (you can lie in bed and listen to the waves!) and with lovely west facing balcony views over the town's rooftops, and is 4 mins walk from the shops of the High St. There are wonderful beach and saltmarsh walks close by and we often spend a week there without using our car. As it's on the first and second floor it's not ideal for someone with walking/climbing difficulties. We find it's lovely being there during autumn/ winter, tucked away up in the cosy living room with a good book after a bracing beach walk, or just watching the waves!
The closest airport is Norwich ( about 1 hour's drive, but with very limited flights), and then Stansted just under 2 hours, or Luton 2hrs 40 mins.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Norwich is under 1 hour's drive away and Cambridge can be reached in 2 hours. But we happily spend 2 weeks just in and around Southwold every summer and a week over New Year- on the beach, around the town, walking to the harbour and around the marshes, then over to picturesque Walberswick and further on to Dunwich to the south, and to the north to Covehithe with its "church within a ruined church"and its wonderfully remote small saline broad or lake. The RSPB's wonderful flagship bird reserve at Minsmere is about 25 mins drive south. And everywhere has a great pub or two!

One of Southwold's special features is its promenade of brightly decorated beach huts. These are wonderful for an after-swim coffee, reading or just relaxing within yards of the water's edge. Many are available for rent by the day or week, and we always have one when we are there for our 2 weeks in the summer.

The harbour, just a beautiful 25 mins walk along the beach, or across the common and the golf course, is a wonderfully ramshackle collection of boats of all sorts, fishermen's sheds, thriving boat yards, chandlery, pub, fresh (and one fried) fish shacks,a wonderful fish restaurant, a cafe on stilts and a sailing club

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We use the flat for our own holidays and rent it out through local agents during the main holiday season. It is used occasionally by family and close friends at other times. It would not be available to Homelink members during UK school holiday/half term periods nor during June/July/August/September. Our local letting agents will help out with breakdown /maintenance problems that you cannot deal with, and we are an hour away by car if need be.
If we are not away on a simultaneous exchange, we would aim to drive over to see you settled in and share a bit more about why Southwold is such a great little part of England!
