Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Haslemere is an excellent base for exploring and enjoying both the local area and south and west England. There are simply too many attractions and activities to mention, but we would be very happy to give you further information according to your particular interests.
Obvious places to visit include London (train 55 mins), the historic cathedral cities of Guildford, Chichester and Winchester, Portsmouth with its historic dockyard, ships, sea front and outlet shopping, Brighton with its Royal Pavilion and the Lanes shopping precinct. Oxford, Canterbury and Bath are within range for day trips.
There are numerous National Trust houses and gardens within easy reach, the nearest being Petworth House (as featured in the film Turner) and Uppark. Also locally are Goodwood, famous for its horse-racing, Festival of Speed and Revival, and Cowdray with its polo lawns and ruined castle.
For those more interested in the countryside, there is easy access from the house to Blackdown, Gibbet Hill and the Devil's Punchbowl. A short car journey takes you to the South Downs Way, running 100 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne, and local areas of outstanding natural beauty such as Hankley Common and Frensham Ponds. Further afield is the New Forest and the Jurassic coast of Dorset.
In addition to all that London has to offer in terms of culture and the arts, Chichester Festival Theatre and the Yvonne Arnaud in Guildford are well known for the quality of their productions.
Local sports facilities include the Herons sports centre with its large pool, gym, squash and badminton facilities, and tennis courts at the end of the road.
