Howard, who is English, is Emeritus Professor of American Studies. He has been retired for almost 20 years, and now spends his time at his computer painting and drawing with his mouse. He now has a second successful career as an artist, producing works for exhibition, as well as post and greeting cards. Kitty, an American and mature student, completed a BA in Art History at Manhattanville College, then came to England on a Fulbright Scholarship to do and MA in Dress and Textile History. Following her wedding to Howard in 1998 and settling in Norwich, she served on the Committee of the Costume and Textile Association, the fund and awareness-raising charity for the Textile and Dress Study Centre for 10 years. She also gave lectures and demonstrations on various aspects of dress and textiles. Kitty now devotes her time and energy to gardening, which has become an all-consuming passion, working to provide a wildlife-friendly garden at their home.

Description of the home we are offering for exchange
This recently renovated 1970's house with 2 upstairs bedrooms (one ensuite), and a large bedroom and ensuite shower room on the ground floor. The garden, while relatively small is well established, but still very much a work in progress. it contains fruit trees (apples and pears) and blueberry, blackberry, raspberries and gooseberries. It is a wildlife garden; so there is a small pond and several bird feeders. We are also fortunate to have a hedgehog or two that visit nightly in the summer. We are situated on a quite road in the lovely village of Cringleford on the outskirts of the Medieval city of Norwich. This "Fine City" and Norfolk itself has more than enough sites to keep one busy exploring, but should you want to travel there are train links to London (under 2 hours), Cambridge (approx. 1 hour), and Ely (approx. 1 hour). Our house is within walking distance of University of East Anglia along woodland paths, and bus stops provide easy access to Norwich with buses every 15 min.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Our neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. We are within easy walking distance of The University of East Anglia with its Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts in its setting next to the beautiful University Broad. Waitrose Supermarket and its café/coffee shop is nearby, as well as a post office (in a pub), a dry cleaners, pharmacy (in Waitrose), and a wine merchant. We have very friendly neighbours; there is a family-run B&B just down the street. And ,the heavens forbid, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is less than 10 minutes away. A 15 minute bus ride takes you into Norwich, where there are many outstanding attractions. Among the most interesting is the 2nd Air Division Memorial Trust's American Library. Located in The Millennium Forum, it is focal point for anyone wanting to know more about America's important presence in England during World War II.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Our house is within walking distance along a lovely wooded path to The University of East Anglia with its world renowned Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts. The city boasts numerous historic sites such as Norwich Castle, The Guild Hall, The Assembly House and the thriving Market along Gentleman's Walk; not to mention, the 1000 year old Norwich Cathedral. There are also many outstanding restaurants, theatres, cinemas, art museums and galleries. The Rivers Wensum and Yare provide access to the beautiful Norfolk Broads, a series of interconnected and navigable lakes that hosts outstanding wildlife viewing. In addition, the coastline and beaches of North and Eastern Norfolk are within easy driving distance, and provide endless hours of walking, fishing and swimming (if you like cold water). Norfolk has the most number of medieval churches in Europe. There are also countless grand and beautiful country houses such as Blickling Hall, Holkham Hall and Felbrigg Hall to name a few.

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules
We must stress that no children are included in the exchange as there is a small pond in the garden. Since the garden is not secure with only a laurel hedge along the boundary with the neighbours garden, we reluctantly cannot allow dogs or cats. Smoking indoors IS NOT ALLOWED. We would prefer that no access is gained to attic and storage rooms or Howard's studio unless absolutely necessary. Calls to other countries via our landline is allowed in emergency only unless otherwise negotiated. A cleaner is provided fortnightly. She comes from 8:30am until 4:30pm. She does not mind if someone is there, but she has her own keys and can let herself in. She does not do laundry or ironing unless this service is negotiated between yourselves. We stress that it is a quiet neighbourhood so parties, if held, must be held within reasonable hours.
