Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

We are in the process of arranging an exchange for Summer 2023 so looking beyond that now.

Our house is detached, with a small garden in the tiny village of Lower Almondsbury. We have three usable bedrooms (the fourth is an office) and our heating is powered by an air source heat pump. We have friendly neighbours in our quiet Close, a thriving community shop run by village volunteers and the village makes the perfect base to explore Bristol, Bath, The Cotswolds and further afield. Although we are only fifteen minutes from a large shopping Mall, cinema and ice rink we have all the advantages of being in a small village surrounded by fields.

Almondsbury is a friendly village, located to the north of the city of Bristol and recently voted best place to live in the UK. Bristol has been a European Green Capital and boasts a network of cycle paths, including the Bristol and Bath railway path - a 13 mile traffic free ride to the historic Georgian city of Bath. Furthermore, some of the most beautiful UK beaches are within two hours of Bristol. Bristol city offers something for everyone, whether you're into music or museums, Brunel or Banksy (I'd recommend the graffiti street art tour!). Bristol Old Vic is one of the oldest continuously running theatres in the UK. There is also a selection of other theatres (Bristol's Hippodrome features musicals, operas and other popular shows) and art galleries well worth a visit. Or perhaps you may want to listen to jazz at The Old Duke, folk and rock at The Canteen or something classical at St George's. There are several festivals throughout the year in Bristol itself e.g. Balloon Fiesta, Kite Festival, Harbourside Festival and Organic Food Fair.

There are many different areas within the city, from the interesting shops and galleries of Clifton village to the historic harbour or the new 'Cabot's Circus'. Bristol has so much to offer and was voted one of the top ten cities in the world to visit by DK Eyewitness Travel Guides. It is cosmopolitan and vibrant, and offers sights such as the Clifton suspension bridge, Avon Gorge (A visit to the Avon Gorge Hotel for a meal/drinks is recommended!) and Brunel's SS Great Britain. In contrast, there are several National Trust properties e.g. Tyntesfield and Dyrham Park which has a stunning house (built circa 1691) and set in 272 acres of gardens. A half hour drive takes you to the beautiful countryside near Nympsfield and Stonehouse, location of Woodchester Mansion. The ancient site of Stonehenge can be reached by car within an hour and is well worth a visit. We will leave a selection of information leaflets and are happy to advise and suggest places to visit. In past exchanges, our neighbours have also been happy to share information on local recommendations!

Almondsbury village itself enjoys many local amenities and easy access to bus/train and motorway networks. The attractive Bowl Inn is our local pub and is just around the corner. There are a variety of exercise classes including Pilates and Fitness in our village hall. There are several lovely walks straight from the house and many more within a few miles. 'The Wave', the UK's only inland surfing experience is a five minute drive (or can also be reached along the Almondsbury lanes by bike) and boasts a 180 m long lake, with surf ranging from 1.5 ft to 6.5 ft, arriving every 10 seconds so suitable for both beginners and experts alike. It also has a great cafe and street food vans - I'll sometimes meet friends there for a drink/snack when not actually using the surfing lake.

Our nearest small town is Thornbury (pop 15,000) and is a typical market town with charming tea rooms, varied restaurants, a small castle and medieval church. There is also a leisure centre with swimming pool and large children's playground just down the road. Cribbs Causeway Shopping Mall is a ten minute drive from us and has shops, restaurants, cinema complex, bowling alley and ice rink.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Wales just half an hour away. The Cotswolds and Stratford upon Avon just over an hour, as is Oxford. Bath Spa, with it's Roman Baths and Spa is twenty minutes by train. Cheddar Gorge and The Forest of Dean are also close by. Lots of National Trust houses and gardens to visit. Bristol itself is steeped in history, has theatres and galleries, an aquarium, Science Centre and Zoo - so lots for kids. 'Wild Place' replaces Bristol's original zoo and is only a 10 minute drive from our village.

The Mall at Cribbs Causeway - nearest shopping Centre
Dyrham Park - 17th century National Trust property with vast gardens, deer, cafe and events.
Clifton Village - charming suburb of Bristol renowned for its shops, restaurants (including The Ivy) and attractive architecture and, of course, Brunel's famous Suspension Bridge.
The Docks - M-shed and 'We are the Curious' worth a visit.
Thornbury Castle - great for afternoon tea.
Clevedon - visit Clevedon and take a walk along the Victorian Pier.
Somerset Coastal Path - less than an hour away explore poet Coleridge's country.
Westonbirt National Arboretum - a half hour's drive, a magical garden where you can explore trees from all over the globe. The arboretum has over 2,500 species of trees and now has a STIHL Tree Top Walkway which takes you on a winding path through the canopy.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

No smoking. Children welcome, though ours are now 16 plus so we don't have any toys or play equipment for younger children. Internet available but please bring your own laptop/tablets. Car not usually offered.

Hoping for somewhere warm, preferable with pool/beach at least once a year - otherwise we are very happy to explore anywhere, including the UK.

We now have a miniature poodle but she will be staying with friends. We also have three gerbils, including a partially sighted male that we have rescued - we would rather they stayed 'in situ' but they don't require much care, other than food, water & minor cleaning - if this doesn't appeal, I can arrange for someone to pop in and do this!
