Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

My house is the end of a block of four houses. Originally it was the girls' school - next door the mistresses house, then the master's house, then the boys ' school. My house faces SW and is very light and sunny.
Downstairs it is open plan, kitchen, dining, and lounge - with patio doors and patio on 2 sides. There is also a study and a double bedroom and bathroom

Upstairs only covers enough to accommodate a double bedroom with roof lights, and a bathroom.
The views are stunning, with mountains around and hills in front - over the hills is the sea.
I have a well (there is no "piped" water to the village.) The pump in the well needs to be regularly switched on to fill the 2000 li deposit tank. The house pump then delivers water into the house on demand

Guests need to be aware of the unusual water suppy and that a close eye needs to be kept on the tank so that it is always topped up.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

This is a renovated old school house situated in a traditional unspoilt Spanish farming village. Almonds and olives are the crops. It is only a 1 ml walk along the rambla, or 3 ml drive to beautiful beaches, La Azohia at the north end of the Bay of Mazarron. All around this bay are lovely and varied beaches - take your pick!

The surrounding hills are perfect for walking.

There are a few foreign residents in the village, most of my neighbours are friendly spanish farmers. There is a bar/restaurant/village Hall just 100m away and the village organises many events to which visitors are always welcome. The bar is always busy at weekends, Livelier and multi- cultural coastal resorts with a variety of bars and restaurants are nearby.

Inland there are mountains, country parks and a number of castles that can be visited on day trips. The one road through the village leads to Cabo Tinoso a remote and deserted but large military cliff top fort built in the 1920's. The english-made guns are still in situ. If you look at the map you get some indication of the breath-taking views when driving to the end of Cabo Tinoso. Once there you can appreciate it's significance in potentially protecting the port of Cartagena, though I don't think the guns were ever fired in anger!

The nearest big town is Cartagena which has a great harbour making it very important from pre-Roman Times. There are several very interesting museums and a model of the first submarine - or the first submarine to return from the depths!

There is a bus stop one and a half miles away. The bus goes to Cartagena where there is a train station. The nearest airport is Corvera (Murcia), less than an hour. Alicante is about 2 hours.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Recently an "Eco tourism" centre has been opened on the village outskirts. The restaurant prides itself on locally sourced produce and cooking everything on site. Delicious. One can eat more cheaply but not enjoy better quality. To enjoy typical "spanish ambience" spend weekend lunch times in the village cantina - about 100yds away.

Beside the road at La Azohia are many cafes and restaurants where you can sit and enjoy the sea views whilst sipping your favourite beverage.

Great markets, Excellent food, Castles, eg Lorca, Cartagena - Roman remains, naval museums, including the first submarine), Murcia - cathedral, casino, museums (eg Salizillo).
Inland Parks eg Sierra Espuna (which has a 4 day mountain bike track and many marked walks)

Granada with the world famous Alhambra can be visited as a day trip.
Sorry - I couldn't find "links" to many of these but type in their names and info is easy to find

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

I expect to find the house as I left it, with special attention to the security and the well and water tank.
Please do not smoke in the house.
No very young children.
My son, his wife and son live near New York but are visiting the UK this summer. Harry (just 14) is learnig French and getting good marks so we hope to spend a WEEK in France between end of June and beginning of August.

I woud love to exchange homes on the West or East shore of Lake Tahoe for a fortnight next summer, towards the end of August. My daughter is the 2021 "Woman of the Year" WOWSA (World Open Water Swimming Association). In the winter she is an ice swimmer (she has completed the "Ice Seven", only the third person in the world to do this, and in the summer she is a marathon swimmer. So you can guess what is coming next .. she is planning to do the width swim across Lake Tahoe, sometime just before August 20th. She asked me if I would like to go with her and I jumped at the chance. I have been to Lake Tahoe before and I know what a great place it is.
Kate is currently hoping to move soon, so can't off her house as a third "echange" option (she is a member of Homelink and this year exchanged in Los Angeles so she could complete the Catalina swim).
