Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

Known in New Zealand as a "bach", this is a holiday home where you come for the outdoors and to get-away-from-it-all. Located on the Kapiti Coast, north of Wellington.

There's a good sized living area and two smallish bedrooms with a divan in the living area. A spacious deck faces the afternoon to evening sun and large garden which is great. Sometimes days are spent reading in the garden with a swim at the beach in the late afternoon. There is a separate kitchen which has all the usual fittings such as stove, microwave and fridge.

The true bach is a simple dwelling, and ours is a true bach. It has internet access (wifi) and a small TV which you can hook up to your own device or play a DVD. It is possible to stay without a car, but to make trips in the region you will need a car.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

The bach is located in amongst others in a 1940s holiday seaside development at Waikanae beach on the Kapiti Coast near Wellington which has hardly changed much till now. Local owners, who are usually from Wellington, keep the baches in good repair but try to maintain that 1950s atmosphere. We are 5-10 minutes stroll to the beach which is safe for small children as Kapiti Island provides shelter.

Waikanae beach village has a good childrens play area, a tennis court for casual use, and there are 3 cafe style restaurants, a bakery and good Four Square for groceries and wine/beer. The nearby Waikanae river offers walking/cycling tracks on either side and there are many other day walks within 10 or 15 minutes drive.

Waikanae township is about a 10 minute drive from the beach and has a summer swimming pool with good picnic grounds, larger supermarkets and shopping area with library and art gallery.

The train Waikanae-Wellington is every hour and one hour's journey. State Highway 1 interchange south to Wellington or destinations north is a few minutes drive away.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

Presently we are concentrating our exchanges within New Zealand. We are doing a trip to UK and Netherlands this year and have accommodation all sorted.

We've been a member since 2011 and have had 18 exchanges - 4 in Europe, 4 in Canada, 7 in New Zealand and 3 in Australia. We look after our exchange partner’s home as if it were our own and have found this to be returned in kind. We have found that exchanges work smoothly when there has been plenty of contact between the parties ahead of time and this is the way we prefer to prepare for the exchange.

The bach is where we stay during non-simultaneous exchanges with our Wellington home. But during a long time simultaneous stay, one exchange couple stayed a few days in the bach which they appreciated. A bach swap with NZers is always welcome.
