Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Kalkara has several local shops where one can purchase basic provisions along with a small café. There is a sandy beach within walking distance in Rinella Bay while the adjacent historic area of the Three Cities has many restaurants and cafés and shops. Supermarkets are in nearby Zabbar and Paola and online grocery shopping is available. There are also mobile sellers of fruits and vegetable within the village as well as a twice weekly local market, farmers market and a Sunday flea market. If you stay any length of time then people will expect you to greet them in the street. The area is calm except during the period of the frequent local festivals when the entire locality comes out to decorate the streets, party and produce spectacular firework displays. Access around the island is easy with the extensive bus network and a local ferry into Valletta and its easy and incredibly inexpensive to hire a car that will be delivered to the apartment by the hire company. Besides providing much to see and do in Malta one is also but a short ferry ride away from Sicily for day excursion or a longer trip and there are summer boats that as far as Genoa. The airport is a short taxi ride from Kalkara and is served not only by Air Malta but also all the major low cost and traditional airlines as well as Emirates, so that one arrives easily from the most far flung destinations.
