Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

HomeLink GOLD MEMBER

Detached 2500sq.ft./230sq.m modern family home its own site with private parking, gardens & panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. It is located in a rural area on a hillside near Ballyferriter (2km) on the scenic and highly popular Dingle peninsula, 4km from the sea and beaches and 6km from the nearest Golfcourse. The nearest village is Ballyferriter with 3 pubs, a hotel, catholic church, restaurant & a small grocery store. All the pubs and the hotel serve meals in summer. In nearby tourism destination town Dingle you will find many restaurants and businesses. We have completed 3 exchanges of our own but Conall has had many previous exchanges with his parents who are exchange veterans (20+) and so fully understands what is expected. We have two friendly but independent housecats who come in during the day to be fed and to sleep. They will need feeding during the exchange but they can be fed by others if you wish to travel during the stay. We also have a working sheep dog but he will be elsewhere during any exchange and will not need to be cared for. Our house was built on the family farm 12 years ago and is surrounded by green fields with grazing sheep and cows.

We have four young kids, 5, 3, 1 years and 2 months old and so the house is child friendly with cots, toddler's bed, high chair, stair guards, baby monitors, a mountain of toys etc. We are currently mostly interested in an exchange with other families with young kids whose houses are also child safe, child proof and child friendly!

Exchangers will have access to a mens roadbike and a mens mountain bike and a ladies Kalkhoff electric bike.

Kerry International Airport is a 1hr drive, with direct links to London Stansted & Luton, Frankfurt Hahn and Dublin all year round & Alicante & Faro in summer. Cork & Shannon Airports are 2.5 hrs & Dublin 4.5hrs drive. Shannon airport has direct flights to New York, Boston, Washington and Philadelphia in the USA as well as some destinations in Europe and Cork has direct flights to other European destinations. Car exchange possible with 2017 Skoda Superb estate which fits 3 car seats in the rear seat and has a very large boot / trunk.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our house is in a quiet rural area, on a mountainside in West Kerry, 4km from sea, 13km from renowned An Daingean / Dingle town & 2km from the nearest small village of Baile an Fheirtearaigh / Ballyferriter and the Wild Atlantic Way route. There is limited public transport here so a car is essential to get around. The house is in a farming area so you will see sheep and cows in the fields near the house.

There are beautiful views from the top of the small mountains behind our house and you can access these via our farmland if you wish. If you like to hill walk then you'll love it here. Ireland's second highest mountain Mount Brandon (953m) across the valley from our house and 15 minutes drive away and the highest mountain Carrán Tuathaill (1041m) is a two hour drive away. If you prefer a more leisurely walk then there are many choices of varying gradient in the area as well as many long sandy beaches.

Nearby Dingle town, which is a 15 minute drive from the house is a popular tourist destination hosting many events such as the Dingle Food Festival, the Dingle Marathon, the Dingle Film Festival, Other Voices music concerts, Feile na Bealtaine Arts Festival, The Dingle Regatta and the Dingle Races. Dingle has many award winning restaurants such as Fentons, The Chart House, Out of the Blue, Lord Bakers, Global Village & Doyle's as well has a lot of pubs with nightly traditional Irish music sessions. In the summer St. James' Church hosts a weekly music concert.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

While Ireland is not renowned for its sunshine we have many beautiful sandy beaches within a few kilometres of our house that are safe for swimming or just walking. For the more adventurous there's paddleboard or kayak rental in Dingle Town or you can learn to surf or windsurf at Inch Beach (30 minutes) or Castlegregory (45 minutes).

For those who like to hike there are many beautiful walks on the surrounding hills and mountains to suit all tastes and abilities.

The 18 hole Ceann Sibéal Golf Course (Dingle Golf Links) is nearby and there are also a number of other notable golf courses within a two hour drive at Ballybunion, Killorglin, Killarney, Tralee, Waterville.

The Great Blasket Island, dis-inhabited in 1953 and accessible via ferry is a must visit and for an authentic experience guests can stay overnight in the Blasket Island Hostel. See loads of photos etc. from the island from someone how spent most of 2019 living on it on twitter @island_lesley A visit to the Blasket Island Centre on the mainland in Dun Chaoin is also recommended.

Fans of film will note that some of the latest Star Wars films were shot here as well as at nearby Skellig Michael Island. Previously Ryan's Daughter (1960s) and Far & Away (1990s) were other films shot in the locality.

Traditional Irish music sessions are in many of the Dingle pubs every evening during the summer months and local Ballyferriter pub O Cathain's hosts a blues session on Sunday afternoons which has a lovely atmosphere. Some pubs in Dingle such as Mc Carthys and An Conair also host rock music and other music sessions and concerts.

Dingle Distillery, which distills both whiskey and gin, and which scooped the top award at the gin awards in London a few years ago is worth a visit http://dingledistillery.ie. As is the nearby pub and microbrewery at Bricks Pub (5 mins) http://westkerrybrewery.ie

For fans of sports there are weekly games of gaelic football played locally where our own team An Ghaeltacht competes in Division 2 of the County League. While Gaelic football is an amateur sport played by local residents, the level of fitness and intensity is as high as that of any professional sport. If you're lucky you'll catch one of the local derby games between An Ghaeltacht and great rivals Dingle, dubbed El Clasico locally, these are always fiery encounters! 2 nearby basketball teams (Tralee Warriors and Killorglin) compete in the national premier league and a third (killarney) in the second tier. Hurling is another high intensity Irish sport. It is not played locally but can be seen in Tralee and north County Kerry as well as on the TV during the summer.

The West Kerry Peninsula has a very high density of historical and archaelogical sites and structures, from Churches and castles to standing stones, beehive huts, ancient burial sites, fairy forts etc. These have all been documented and museum in Ballyferriter (2km) gives further detailed information. Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

Our house is child friendly. We don't smoke and don't allow any smoking in the house however smoking is permitted outside the house. We have two house cats that come in during the day and need feeding in the morning and evening. Feeding can be arranged if you are travelling. Cats are kept to the utility room mostly and they go out at night. We also have a small number of plants around the house that will need occasional watering. No watering is required for outside plants (this is Ireland, natural watering occurs regularly!). We would be able to offer a car exchange but would need to exchange with a car that could accommodate 6 people. We have 2 cars and we could exchange one of these. One of the cards has 5 seats and the other with 7, depending on your requirements.
