There are three of us in our family. Leonie is British and Xose is Galician but both of us have lived for many years in Madrid with our son, Anton who is now 18. We enjoy the arts- theatre, cinema and particularly music and, for this reason, love living in the very centre of the city. However we like to escape to the countryside for our holidays and particularly love coastal walks.

Description of the home we are offering for exchange
Ours is a spacious, cheerful flat on the second floor of a typical historic building in the heart of the city. We have 2 double bedrooms plus a study/guest room, a living room, a large, comfortable kitchen and 2 bathrooms, one with a bath/shower and the other with a shower. There are three double-glazed balconies onto the street so that, although our area is lively, you can cut out any outside noise. The flat has been recently completely renovated and retains a lot of original character, all the installations however-electricity, plumbing and kitchen appliances- are brand new.
We can also offer our holiday flat in Galicia (North West coast of Spain) if you would like to combine a city break with a coastal holiday. The flat is in a small town called Ares and is 5 minutes walk from a safe beach and good facilities-ideal for families- and close to spectacular Atlantic beaches. If you're interested, we would provide more information, photos etc.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
We are right in the heart of the historic city centre but the neighbourhood is not overly touristy and retains a friendly feel. Lavapies is truly multicultural; you can find traditional family businesses- fish shops, bakeries and tapas bars alongside Indian restaurants and African craft shops. The Reina Sofia, Prado and Thyssen museums are all within easy walking distance as is the Retiro Park. Many local initiatives have sprung up in the area and are also well worth seeking out. Our local market is a great place not only to buy fresh food but also houses good places to eat (vegetarian included) plus one of the most famous flamenco schools in Spain. If you're interested in live music, art, culture or just taking in tapas, you'd very much like our neighbourhood!

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
The Prado, Reina Sofia, Thyssen museums, the Botanical Garden, Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor , Retiro Park and Rastro street market are all within easy walking distance. We are surrounded by tapas bars, restaurants and live music cafes. Atocha station is 20 minutes walk away and from here you can take the train to the historic towns of Aranjuez, Toledo and Segovia or to Cercedilla from where you can explore Madrid's mountain walks, natural swimming pools and the Pina a PIno" tree climbing activities. If you want to go further (and can afford the tickets!) you can even take day trips to Barcelona and Seville - approx 2.5 hours away on the fast "Ave" train. Children will enjoy the Retiro Park, the cable cars which run into the Casa de Campo where there is a boating lake and the zoo.
