Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

We are interested in exchanges in Ireland, Croatia, Poland, Slovenia, Portugal and the UK.

The house is very old and sits within the ramparts of Haut de Cagnes, a medieval hilltop village, but is only 15 minutes by car or bus from Nice airport. The house is very comfortable and well furnished with modern kitchen and bathrooms and a pretty paved garden with orange and olive trees. One bedroom and shower room are in a separate studio at garden level. The house is only 2 minutes' walk from the main square of the village with 7 restaurants and the Chateau Grimaldi as well as beautiful views. In the 1950s the house was owned by a French actor, Jean Pierre Aumont, a war hero, who romanced Grace Kelly. The locals remember her visiting the house before her marriage to Prince Rainier. The garden with 2 terraces and lighting has seating for 6 and a parasol. We eat outside for several months of the year. The house is not suitable for children as there is an open stone staircase. The village and house is also unsuitable for people with problems walking as the lanes are cobbled and uneven.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our neighbourhood is pretty quiet but there are jazz concerts on the village square in summer and the chateau is popular with visitors. Several restaurants are to be found within a 5 minute walk of the house so you don't need to cook though there is an excellent range cooker in the kitchen and a large gas barbecue in the garden. The neighbours are a mixture of French and mostly Scandinavian with some British as well. There is a free shuttle bus to the town below the village (7 minutes) and from there excellent bus links to St. Paul de Vence, Antibes, Nice and train links to Cannes, Monaco and the Italian border which can be reached in an hour making a day trip to Italy easy. Our area is famous for artists such as Renoir who lived in Cagnes sur Mer for the last period of his life and you can visit his house, Picasso who worked in a magnificent house on Antibes seafront which you can also visit, Modigliani who lived in our village etc. Fondation Maeght in St. Paul de Vence is wonderful. Our village has several artisans' studios with great jewellery, photography etc.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

From our house it is a short walk to 10 restaurants/cafes. In the town 10 minutes walk down the hill, there is a large variety of shops, banks, cafes as well as bus links to Nice, Antibes, St. Paul de Vence, Grasse and Vence plus a train station with links to Monaco, Beaulieu, Villefranche, Nice and Italy. San Remo in Italy has a fantastic market on Saturdays and Tuesdays and Ventimiglia on the border has the market on a Friday. Renoir's house can be visited in Cagnes sur Mer and there is a Matisse Art Museum in Nice as well as the Musee Massena and Musee Chagall. There are many great restaurants in Nice, a flower market every day but Monday (antiques market) and the Old Town is fascinating to explore. A car is not necessary are transport links are very good. The Promenade du Paillon is a wonderful new garden which cuts a swathe through the centre of Nice and is stunning with its reflective pools, layout of gardens in the 6 continents and children's playground.
