Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

Not looking for further 2023 exchanges, thanks. We would be interested in simultaneous or non-simultaneous European exchanges for up to 1 week at various times in 2024, and possibly in a trip to Montreal / Quebec in the summer of 2024.
Our delightful holiday home in the south of France is a modern house on a development with a shared pool. It has an open outlook over olive trees, and is situated only 10 minutes' stroll from the stunning medieval town centre of Uzès. Uzès is a thriving community with one of the best street markets anywhere in France every Saturday in the Place aux Herbes.
The house comprises a sitting room with kitchenette, 2 bedrooms, bathroom and toilet. There is a small garden with patio which gets full sun in the morning, and part sun / part shade in the afternoon.
Both the kitchenette and bathroom have been fully upgraded. The house is fully equipped and ready for you, including air-con in the bedrooms, and Wifi.
Uzès is a beautiful town with much to offer, including a wealth of competitively-priced restaurants and interesting shops. It is also a great base from which to explore.
NB our main home 15 miles west of Edinburgh can occasionally be available for exchanges. Please contact us if this is of particular interest to you.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

The house is located on the edge of a modern development (La Bastide d'Uzès), with easy access to all facilities. Uzès is small but perfectly formed - only 8,000 residents yet it offers historic monuments such as the Duchy Palace, concerts, an art-house cinema, tennis and cycling. Not to mention the almost 100 restaurants currently listed on Tripadvisor! There is a full range of shopping opportunities, from the famous street market, to boutique and antiquarian specialists, to a choice of supermarkets.
The town centre has been sympathetically restored. Wandering the narrow, cobbled streets is a delight, especially with so many opportunities to stop for a cold drink in one of the tree-lined squares.
Back at the house, the shared swimming pool is sun-heated and refreshing and sociable.
We explored options in various parts of France but we immediately fell in love with Uzès on our first visit. We love to be there, and to have the chance to share it with others.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

On your way to the town centre, you may find yourself distracted by one of the 2 neighbouring boulangeries, or by the turn-off for a delightful shady country walk. When you reach the centre, you'll find a huge range of cafés and restaurants. We've tried quite a few and it seems to be almost impossible to have a bad meal in Uzès: it's just a question of how formal / informal, chic / experimental etc you want to be.
Uzès is the seat of the First Duchy of France. Not that the title counts for anything in the modern republic, but the Ducal Palace still sits in the old town and offers guided tours. Close by is the more relaxed option of the Medieval Garden, from which you can climb the tower for a roof-top view. You will also be offered tea brewed from some of the herbs grown in the garden!
Shopping and food are serious pleasures in France. Put these together and you have the amazing Saturday market (with a smaller version on Wednesdays) in the Place aux Herbes. Our advice is to get there early, enjoy all the tempting tasty bites on offer, then relax over a coffee and watch the rest of the world go by.
The Pont du Gard is possibly the best-preserved Roman aqueduct in the world. It was the most obvious part of an engineering project to transport water 50kms to Nîmes, starting from Uzès. There is now a visitor centre with shops, exhibitions etc. Entry is free if you cycle (a national cycle route cuts through the park).
Further afield, Uzès is ringed by fascinating villages such as Arpaillargues, St Quentin La Poterie (yup - great place to buy artisanal stoneware), Collias (good for river swimming and canoeing), Lussan and Vers Pont du Gard. Nimes, Avignon, Orange, Arles, Aix-en-Provence and Montpellier are all historic and cultural cities. The Cevennes and the Camargue are perfect if you want to get into the hills, or head to the beach.
