Autun is a natural region and is often described as a village away from the crowd. But in reality, it's nestled to the North of southern Burgundy, on the foothills of Morvan; it enjoys a preserved environment and an exceptional location in the centre of Burgundy.

There is so much to discover in Autun, so just let yourself be seduced!

Autun, backed by wooded hills, overlooking the Arroux Valley, is the main town. With 2000 years of history makes Autun a "must-see" town in Burgundy. Born from the desire of the Emperor Augustus, around 15 BC, it is located 30 km east of Mount Beuvray at strategic crossroads for transportation. It has retained from this period the Gallo-Roman remains that are still standing: The Temple known as Janus, the gates of Arroux and Saint-André, the theatre, ramparts and towers and the Pierre de Couhard... The Saint-Lazare Cathedral, erected in a Clunisian style from around 1120, was given to the bishop and the upper part of the village with its narrow streets and half timbered houses, by the Christians of the middle ages.

Stroll around the Autun countryside and its many villages largely situated on the Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan.

Autun's wealth is also expressed in the landscapes that alternates between large forests on the hills and groves dedicated to free range farming. Whether you are sporty or just want to go for a walk, horseback riding or mountain biking, there are hundreds of marked trails for you to wander around.
Autun has entertainment throughout the year: The Spring Festival (chamber music) in March, the Book Festival in April in Autun, and in August in Anost, dramatised visits "The Night of the Gargoyle" in July and August , animations of "Roman days" on the ancient lives in July, a historical show "Augustodunum ®, Julius Caesar" end of July-early August, a festival "Fête de la Vielle" in Anost in August...

Autun will delight you with its historical and cultural wealth as well as its museums, its guided tours and its guided tours on the tourist train. From golf through to sailing on the Vallon lake: there are many recreational activities available to you, the invitation for relaxation and well-being is on the cards.

Autun, the ideal holiday place in Morvan and Burgundy!

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

From our house you are 5 minutes walking from restaurants, shops, cafes, cinema. Autun is very pleasant to live in, come and see by yourself.

Ancient heritage, medieval heritage, heritage of the 19th century: Autun is full of treasures to discover! Splendid Gothic AND Roman cathedral, roman doors, ramparts, roman ancient theatre...

The museums of Autun offer different types of visits for children and adults, as well as for lovers of art, history, science or traditions.

The beautiful landscapes of Autun and its protected environment are ideal for hiking, horseback riding or mountain bike adventures. In the rolling countryside of Autun, you will discover vast areas of forests on the hills, wooded countryside dedicated to breeding on the plains, turbulent rivers and small streams.

A large choice of natural relaxation!
For budding lovers of fine food, Autun is the place for satisfaction! Apart from the AOC Charolais beef, cheese producers (mainly goat) and honey producers, Autun also has producers of foie gras and duck derivatives, homemade organic beer and jam producers.

A must during the fairs - March 1 and Saint-Ladre (1 September) enjoy a tête de veau with a gribiche or ravigote sauce. Here you have great restaurants with typical Burgundian dishes (beef bourguignon, poached eggs, coq au vin, Morvan cured ham ...) punctuates the stay for food lovers. Discover the gourmet addresses of Autun and come and taste regional cuisine, traditional cuisine or the cuisine from other regions of the world.

Very committed to upholding culinary traditions, some inns offer at the end of the afternoon "The Morvan Quatr'heures." This meal comes from a peasant tradition:, after a hard day we sit down at the table to take a break and to regain strength to keep going until supper time. On the menu: ham, locally produced rosette, bacon omelette, farmhouse cream cheese and a loaf of bread. Expect to be sated...

On the sweet side: Morvan hazelnuts, roasted and coated in an almond paste and baked will seduce the true gourmands. The Talleyrand coffee is also to be tested, 100% Arabica "quite full-bodied with a long lasting taste" the shop "Pause Café" (in the shopping area in Autun) roasts this mixture of coffee that is selected and blended by a hand crafted process based on a letter dated 26 December 1825 written by Maurice de Talleyrand from Marseille (he was amongst these different lives, the Bishop of Autun). It matches his famous definition of coffee: "Coffee should be black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel and sweet as love". To satisfy your taste buds accompany your tasting with the "Grain défendu" a confectionery made of Arabica coffee beans coated with chocolate.

The markets take place in the rooms of the City Hall and on the forecourt on:

Wednesdays from 7 am to 1 pm: Food market
Fridays from 7 am to 1 pm: large market

Please note that the shop keepers organise the "Grande braderie des commerçants" (a jumble sale) at the end of July.
Trade fairs and funfairs:

1st March
The Saint-Ladre fair: 1st September
