Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

This is an 18th century stone farmhouse in SW France (an hour north of Bordeaux). There are four bedrooms, a huge, traditional French country kitchen, and an enormous garden room/lounge. In addition, there is a master bedroom, with its own lounge and patio and private bathroom. The house has a meandering garden that leads to a field of olive trees, with amazing views out the back gate, and is on the edge of the lovely village of Saint-Thomas-de-Conac. The village, which is situated on the scenic 'Route Verte,' has everything you might need: an artisanal boulangerie, a local boucherie with fresh meat, cheese, and delicious prepared food, and an epicerie with a terrific selection of wines. There is also a restaurant run by a lovely Scottish couple and did we mention the 11th-century Romanesque church?

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our neighborhood, in the Charente-Maritime, is a landscape of vineyards and sunflowers, on the border between the wines of Bordeaux and the distilleries of Cognac. There are gourmet restaurants, morning markets with local produce, seafood and especially fresh oysters, and night markets where local chefs serve up local delicasies. We are a short drive from the 19th century Atlantic beach resorts of St-George-de Didonne and Royan. These are family-friendly super-wide sand beaches, beloved in Europe for their cafes and restaurants and 'La Belle Époque' ambience. The nearby rolling hills and spectacular views of the Gironde (the largest estuary in Europe), exploding with poppies and colza in the Spring, then sunflowers erupt in early summer; and then, in early Autumn, figs are everywhere, the vines turn red and with them, the lively celebrations of harvest time.

Saint-Thomas-de-Conac is a lovely little French village that is close to wondeful beaches, the best wines in the world, exquisite markets and restaurants. We are one hour from the cultural center of Bordeaux, with its spectacular dining and shopping, Opera House, museums and international airport. Cognac, Jonzac and Saintes are historic cities within an hour's drive, each with its own special ambience and beauty. Visit our many 12th century Romanesque churches, medieval castles, cognac and wine chateaus, thermal baths and belle epoque beach resorts. Hiking, horse-back riding, sailing, antiquing, all nearby!
