A few words about Dijon and Burgundy :
Dijon was home of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy from the early 11th century until the late 15th. It was one place of tremendous power and wealth and one of the great European centres of arts, learning and science. This historical heritage is still very present nowadays in Dijon streets and the historical centre is very well preserved. You will see plenty of undamaged half-timbered houses dating from the 12th to the 15th centuries. You will also see the famous Burgundian polychrome roofs made of tiles glazed in terracotta and arranged in geometric patterns. Among the highlights of the historical centre is the Ducal Palace which includes examples of Capetian architecture.
Dijon is home to many interesting museums, including the Musee des Beaux-Arts, in part of the Ducal Palace. Most of them are free.
Dijon is the gateway to the most prestigious vineyard of Burgundy. From Dijon to Santenay, you can follow the great wines of Burgundy trail, discover the magnificent landscapes with vines as far as the eyes can see and the numerous country mansions and taste the wine of course !
There are also many lovely places to visit nearby, like the little town of Beaune, famous for its wine and its 15th century Hotel-Dieu, a hospital founded in the middle ages and wonderfully preserved to this day.
If you want to discover more of France, you can easily go on a day trip to Paris (1 hour and a half by high speed train), to Lyon (2 hours by car or train) or to the Jura mountains and Switzerland(1 hour drive).
