Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

This area of Copenhagen is called Islands Brygge. It is an old workers' quarter transformed into a modern and lively neighbourhood with small shops and cafés. Islands Brygge offers ample shopping possibilities within walking distance: three supermarkets, three bakeries, an off license, a diversity of take-away, cafés and small shops selling clothes, jewelry, ceramics and other bits and pieces by local designers.

It is a very safe neighbourhood, and your children are likely to make new friends in the many playgrounds (some of which are just outside the building) or by the harbour bath (yes, it is safe to swim in the harbour) (see video about the harbour bath here: http://vimeo.com/35367946 ). The beach is just 15 minutes away by Metro train.

The flat is very close to all forms of transportation. Buses and underground are just around the corner. The Central Station is a 15 minute walk away. From here you can take local, regional, national and international trains (Sweden is just 45 minutes away). Copenhagen Airport is 30 minutes away by underground or taxi.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

In Copenhagen you are never far away from anything. Main shopping streets are 15-20 minutes walk from our home. Tivoli Gardens is 15 minute walk away. The National Museum and Glyptoteket (collection of ancient antiquities and Danish and French sculpture and painting from the 19th century) are within walking distance.

You can walk along the harbour or take one of the harbour busses to experience Copenhagen from the water. The harbour busses will also take you to see the Little Mermaid. You can also take a Canal Cruise for at guided tour of Copenhagen.

You should of course not miss Amalienborg (the royal palace), Christiansborg (parliament) or the old city centre.

Copenhagen has lots of museums with Danish and international art: Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Art) and Den Hirsprungske Samling (The Hirsprung Collection of Danish art from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries). Outside Copenhagen you will find Louisiana Museum of Moderne Art (north of Copenhagen) or Arken Museum of Modern art (south of Copenhagen). Copenhagen also has lots of galleries showcasing contemporary art.

Copenhagen har plenty of parks and playgrounds for children.

Everything can be reached by foot, bike or by public transport (metro and buses operate round the clock, and local, regional and national trains can be used for days trips).
