We are a mixed family, Dutch and English: John, Sandra, Emily and Oliver, the latter being our 2 teenage children who are bilingual and were born here in Belgium. We cycle nearly everywhere but do have a car; we like to be environmentally friendly and recycling is big in this country. Oliver and I are amateur musicians (violin) and we tinkle on the piano occasionally. I am a translator/writer and John is a professor of human genetics at Leuven university. We love the quality of life in Belgium, the chocolates and of course the beer! It's a child-friendly and bicycle-friendly town, with lots of entertainment and countryside too, depending on your preferences.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Our home is a 5-10 minute bike ride from the city centre, from the train/bus station in Leuven. There are numerous really good cafe/restaurants (vegetarian and otherwise) within a few minutes bike ride, and maximum 10 minute walk down the hill. Supermarkets within 500 m to 1 km. Bike path along canal a few minutes away. Good links from train station to Bruges, Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Liege, Paris (via Brussels), Amsterdam (via Brussels), Cologne (via Brussels). The city of Leuven has a lot going on in the summer, festivals and events. Lots of music in Leuven and other main cities. The Ardennes are an hour or so away for walking/hiking, enjoying the outdoor, though there are plenty of nature opportunities nearby.

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules
Of course, we would like our house and garden and their contents to be treated with respect. We would endeavour to do the same in any home we occupied in exchange. Feel free to use the piano and read our books. The bikes can be used - just be sure to lock them up well, except when in our garage. We don't mind if the guest family uses food from the pantry or freezer.
