Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
We live about 4 km from the Ghent town center (15 minutes by car, bus or bicycle). Ghent is a wonderful mediaeval city. It’s the ancient capital of Flanders with al lot of historic monuments (Gravensteen, Duivelsteen, St. Baafskathedraal, Belfort, St. Pieters and St. Baafsabdij, vleeshuis, pand, 3 begijnhoven, etc…).
There are plenty of cultural attractions e.g. art galleries, museums, arts and craft shops and musical events. Ghent has its own unique annual events, Gentse Feesten (July), Festival van Vlaanderen (September), Filmfestival (October) There is an opera, several theatres and concert halls and a lot of fine restaurants and pubs. It’s a young and vivid city with a lot of students (university).
Next to the city, there are several castles and parks, sports facilities, etc… The area is perfect for walking, cycling, and touring, or just relaxing. Don’t forget to make a boat trip on the river Leie and the city canals. You will certainly not wonder what to do in this area and may even have a problem fitting it all in!
There is also a lot to see and do within a 1 hour drive. To Bruges, Antwerp and Brussels it's only 50 km, Ypres battlefields, the North Sea, Lille (France) only 75 km. Even Paris, London, Amsterdam and Cologne are at less then 300 km.
Ghent is an easy place to reach. It has two train stations, good bus links, highways (E17-E40). Brussels, Oostende, and Charleroi airport are just 75 km away.
