We are university professors on sabbatical leave next academic year (2019-2020), which will take us to New York City and Southern California. We are extremely quiet but we also like socializing with new neighbors abroad and are as careful and attentive to other people's properties and belongings as to our own. We can never read enough, and wish we could write more, hence the sabbatical.
We live in Brussels, the capital city of Belgium, and also of Europe. This means we are 2 hours from London, Amsterdam, and Köln, and 1h20 from Paris, by train! Brussels (and thus Belgium) is an ideal hub to discover Europe. The city (and country) also has its own cultural gems (painting, architecture, fashion, photography), is multilingual (English is a lingua franca) and multicultural.

Description of the home we are offering for exchange
Spacious and bright duplex apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, two terraces, one large office for two and beautiful views from top floor penthouse. Ideal location on the Southern edge of the city, within walking distance of a magnificent (Unesco world-heritage) forest, yet only 20 minutes from center by public transport (tram, bus, and train). We rent our apartment, but our lovely landlady lives just next door (which is very convenient, should you need help or advice). Close to major university campuses (10 minutes from ULB and VUB by tram; 30 minutes from UCLouvain, and 1 hour from KULeuven, UGent, Liège and Antwerp by train - yes, Belgium is a small country).

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Our residential neighbourhood is in the heart of Watermael-Boitsfort, one of the greenest and most peaceful parts of Brussels. Small shops, bars, restaurants, and a fresh market (on Sundays) are within walking distance, as are kilometres of trails in the gorgeous Forêt de Soignes (parts of which are Unesco World Heritage) starting literally across the street. Very efficient public transports will get you anywhere (tram, bus and train nearby; metro just 5 tram stops away).

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Brussels is the ideal hub to enjoy Europe as it is centrally located and very well connected. For example, a high-speed train ride will take you to Paris in 1h25, to Amsterdam in 1h55 or to London in 2 hours. You can literally visit anyone of these cities for the day. Not to mention Bruges or Ghent and so many wonderful cities very close by.

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules
Our immediate neighbours are used to our being very respectful of their privacy and well being, just like they are of ours. No partying or noisy reception please.
