Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

** We are looking for July 2024, to go to a place that is German or French speaking (want the kids to practice languages!). Maybe also Copenhagen, have a cousin there. **

Just across the bridge from San Francisco, but in the East Bay which is less busy and allows for a somewhat larger house with a garden.

The house is currently set up to have one parents room with a very large bed, one children's room with a bunk bed. The third bedroom is set up as a home office but does have a sofa bed that can sleep 2 people.

The garden has outdoor furniture so you can have a garden party, or just eat dinner outside. Inside, there is a large dining table that seats nine, and a smaller kitchen dining area that seats four. The main living room has a piano, a keyboard, and there is also a guitar. The internet is fast and stable. We do not have any pets. There are many parks nearby, including ones with many redwood trees; the Oakland Zoo is 8km away, and there are the museums and parks of central Oakland also about 8km away. San Francisco is not so far, and fairly quick to get there in off-hours.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Oakland is a large city, in terms of land area. While we are well within the limits of the city, we are also about seven kilometers from the city center, making our particular neighborhood feel more suburban than urban. We are in the Oakland Hills, which is a more quiet and green area of the town. We are a 10 minute drive from miles and miles of beautiful hiking trails through redwood forests and oak woodland.

The BART light rail to get to San Francisco (and other places) is about 4 km away, and there are commuter busses that stop about one kilometer away. Driving to San Francisco takes about twenty minutes at lower traffic times.

Our street is quiet, and we have wonderful, friendly neighbors. There are speed bumps, so as long as you have an adult watching it's fairly safe to have small children bicycling in the street. Our kids walk around our neighborhood to friends' houses on their own. We are a 15 minute walk to a playground.

There are two small shopping districts for basic things each about a kilometer away ("Fruitvale" and "Dimond"), each with grocery shopping, a couple of banks, and other shops. There is a long bicycle and walking path along the San Francisco Bay (the "Bay Trail"), museums, restaurants, concert venues, bars, art festivals, etc.

You could probably get away with not driving. Oakland's bicycle infrastructure is decent for the United States, although still somewhat lacking compared to a major European city. However, because we're a little bit further from the city center, and because there's a lot of on-street parking, most people in the neighborhood tend to drive most of the time for their day to day needs getting around.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

The San Francisco Bay Area is a unique spot. We have the Pacific Ocean and California coast, wine country, the Sierra Nevada mountains, and many state and national parks within a few hours' drive. Close to home, San Francisco is a wonderful city to explore. Highlights are Golden Gate Park, the Presidio with the new Tunnel Tops recreation area, the Embarcadero, Golden Gate Bridge, and the Museum of Modern Art. But of course there is so much more to see!

We highly recommend driving to Jack London Square and then taking the ferry to San Francisco. If you like to bike, you can bring your bikes on the ferry, then bike along the Embarcadero, over the Golden Gate Bridge, down into the little waterfront town of Sausalito, and then take the ferry back. It is the most wonderful day trip.

Our home is also a great jumping-off point for other day trips and longer trips. Driving along Highway 1 on the California coast - either north or south - is not to be missed. Nearby Napa Valley has cute towns and many, many wineries. Point Reyes National Seashore has miles of beautiful beaches, and is close to small towns with cute shops and oyster bars. Half Moon Bay and Pescadero are wonderful beach towns with restaurants and shops. We are also about an hour and a half from Santa Cruz, a great town to visit with a strong surf culture. Three and a half hours away is beautiful Lake Tahoe, at the border of California and Nevada.
