Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

The winter holidays are magical in Santa Fe, where three cultures and multiple religions offer numerous ways to celebrate the season. On Christmas Eve, listen to baroque music at St. Francis Auditorium and then join hundreds of revelers enjoying carols, cider, and camaraderie by walking famed Canyon Road which is illuminated by bonfires ("farolitos" and "luminarias"). At midnight and on Christmas Day, visit a local pueblo to watch American Indian dancers in centuries-old rituals. My home is located in a quiet neighborhood less than a mile from the central plaza and Canyon Road and a short driving distance to the nearest Pueblo.

Santa Fe is a cultural and art capital of the world, so why not surround yourself with art while you visit? My art-filled home allows you to truly experience the wonder of the area. Art, artifacts, and antiques have been lovingly collected locally and from around the world. A few things are breakable, and you will feel more comfortable leaving young children at home. A small, well-behaved dog might be welcome in the house and fenced side yard. Please inquire.

The two-story house tumbles down a small hill to a greenbelt, taking advantage of the terrain. Enter the front door after passing through the antique doors that are just below street level, and walk down eight stairs to a portal (covered patio in New Mexico parlance) with ample seating to enjoy the morning sun. The front door, accessible from the portal, leads to the Western Foyer which welcomes you with western art and artifacts before you take three more steps into the large living room that looks out on the greenbelt. Or drive into the garage and use the interior stairway to access the living level. A second level is accessible by the interior stairway; however, it is used for storage and is currently closed off.

To the right of the Western Foyer is a bedroom with a king-size bed and ample closet space that is empty except for two air mattresses and metal frames that could be used in a pinch if the inlaws or adult children make a surprise visit. Abundant afternoon sun and beautiful sunsets on the west side of the house (where the kitchen and living room are located) add to the intrinsic warmth of the house. A kiva fireplace will greet you in the living room, already stacked in the traditional New Mexico way with aromatic pinon firewood. Additional firewood is off the patio — just outside the living room door. Concerned about summer heat? Due to the way the house is situated, the living area is cool, even during the warmest two-week period that typically occurs in June. Quick and dramatic rain showers in July and August give way to beautiful sunsets at this 7,200-foot elevation. Most summer rain showers last no more than 30-60 minutes.

Ski Santa Fe is a short 30-minute drive up the hill, where you'll find good winter skiing, spring and summer hiking, and fall colors that can be enjoyed by hitching a ride on the ski lift that runs for sightseers the first two weeks of October. Skiers will also like Taos Ski Valley, less than 2 hours away, which offers 110 trails from 14 ski lifts.

Santa Fe is a culinary oasis, but if you get tired of eating out, visit the farmer's market at the Railyard for seasonal local produce, and create your own Northern New Mexico masterpiece in the fully appointed kitchen. Copper pots and appliances of every sort make cooking-in easy. A barbeque grill makes summer al fresco dining on the deck perched over the greenbelt and just off the kitchen a lovely and memorable experience.

For the road-warrior travelers who must mix business with pleasure, the Internet-equipped office will keep you connected. There are three computer monitors and two keyboards with multiple hookups suitable for most laptops. Three printers that are connected by wifi will allow you to print business documents or your day's sightseeing itinerary. The wifi extends throughout the house, connecting your device to speakers when you prefer not to explore the international collection of CDs that can be played on the traditional CD player in the living room. The television uses a Roku streaming device connected to the house wifi.

But why would you spend the day in the house when Santa Fe beckons to be explored? A path in the greenbelt behind the house leads to downtown Santa Fe and the plaza, a 20-minute walk. Canyon Road art galleries are the same distance by veering left when you emerge from the path. You'll find a hand-drawn map in the office to ensure you won't get lost. Paths are not illuminated, and an Uber return is advisable after dark.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Close to the historic Santa Fe Plaza, Canyon Road, and world-class restaurants, the neighborhood is a short, downhill walk to almost everything Santa Fe has to offer. The house is located on a greenbelt with a path right outside the back door that wends its way to town. Pathways are not illuminated and walkers are advised to call an Uber after dark. The greenbelt offers nature and privacy, especially in summer when fully-leaved deciduous trees block from view most other homes in the area. In winter, watch deer and regional fauna while sipping a beverage as a fire burns in the kiva fireplace. Few children live in this neighborhood and houses rarely go on the market because the location and peaceful ambiance are difficult to leave.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Santa Fe has the sixth-most art galleries in the world, but it's more than that. Founded as a Spanish colony in 1610, the historic plaza remains the center of activity. With three distinct cultures, Pueblo-style architecture, and adobe landmarks, boredom is not an option. Bike paths and fat-tire trails help work up an appetite for traditional sopaipillas and fry bread. The official website of the city's Tourism Department, https://www.santafe.org/, provides information about things to see and do. An extensive commercial website, at https://santafe.com/, has a list of events taking place, including summer music on the plaza, world-class opera, group hiking, markets (Indian Market, Spanish Market, Folk Art Market, etc.) and museum opening hours. Travel & Leisure Online Magazine offers a Santa Fe travel guide at https://www.travelandleisure.com/travel-guide/santa-fe.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

I am delighted to share my home with you, but because of the art and collectibles, you will feel more comfortable if you leave the kids at home. A small, well-behaved dog might be accommodated if you and I are comfortable that everything will be safe. Smoking is not allowed in the house. Due to the highly flammable greenbelt, outside smokers must use an ashtray. Plant watering inside and on the patios might be needed if the exchange is in the summer and longer than one week.
