Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

We are a non-Jewish family in a large house in a prosperous Orthodox Jewish neighborhood. We are a 10 minute walk to the subway and a half hour subway ride to Midtown Manhattan.

My sons are married and live in other cities. I have two male student tenants; each has his own room. They have experience hosting Homelink families, and are helpful.

My house was 100 years old in 2013. It is comfortable but not fancy. If you go to Google to look at it, be sure you are looking at 888 E 19th Street in Brooklyn, not in Patterson. The large tree to the left in the Google picture fell on the car and house in Hurricane Sandy (10/12), as shown in picture 5 here. Picture 6 shows a workman finishing the last repair (4/13). There is a queen bed in the large master bedroom on the top floor, and a small guest room there with a double bed. There is a guest room on the middle floor with a double bed. There is a not-very comfortable pull out couch that makes into a double bed on the main floor. At large family gatherings, we have set up a single cot, or a comfortable air mattress.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Midwood is a predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of single family homes. The number one rated pizza by the slice in NY is a ten minute walk away (it's not kosher), and within a few blocks are Bengali, Pakistani, Russian, Mexican, Caribbean and Yuppie neighborhoods with ethnic restaurants of all kinds. Coney Island is an 18 minute subway ride away.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

While some of our many Homelink guests have concentrated on Brooklyn, most spend their time in Manhattan. If you don't have an idea of what Manhattan has to offer, I suggest you vacation somewhere else! If my car is available (sometimes I travel with it; sometimes I leave it behind), there are wonderful places to visit in the Hudson Valley and on Long Island.
