Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

This is a small community just outside the very attractive town of Shaftesbury in Dorset. Shaftesbury was an old Saxon Hill top town, the highest town in Dorset and the centre has old interesting buildings, old Abbey ruins and a range of shops. The town is within easy walking distance up a narrow lane. I have a lovely view over country to Duncliffe woods - famed for the profusion of bluebells there (end April).

Several National Trust properties are nearby (eg Stourhead), Stonehenge is half an hour away, The Jurassic Coast is just over an hour's drive away.

For a bus one must go into Shaftesbury, (1mile) and the train station is at Gillingham (3 miles)

All the "Neighbourhood Services" are in Shaftesbury or Gillingham, not at Long Cross.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Lots of lovely walks nearby. Those of you old enough to remember the old "Hovis" bread advert will find "Gold Hill" (up which the boy pushed his bike) unchanged. It now has an excellent museum too. Stourhead, a very popular National Trust property is very near, as is Stonehenge. The sea at Poole, Bournemouth, Swanage, Studland and a bit further the "Jurassic Coast" are easily accessible for a day's outing. The train station at Gillingham (3 miles) is very convenient.
I have not lived here long, but would recommend the local museum, Abbey ruins, the very many walks and country pubs. As these can change I leave up to date information in the house.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

I expect to find the house as I left it. It has been newly decorated. Please do not wear outside shoes in the house.
No smoking in the house, or near open windows please.
My son with his wife and son live near New York but shall be in England this summer. Harry (16) is learning french and doing well and we would love to have a week in France together this summer.
Apart from the above I have no more time left this year, 2024 for other exchanges.
