Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

Our home is a 4 bedroom modern, family house with a large garden including hot tub and children's playset, trampoline & football goal situated on the site of the former Nottinghamshire County Asylum which is now a quiet parkland village called Upper Saxondale located a few miles east of Nottingham city. Within a few minutes walk are historic 19th century hospital buildings, a play-park, tennis courts, community orchard & forest garden, family friendly Italian restaurant, beautician/ hairdressers & church. Ideal for young children & dogs to explore the parkland. We are in an ideal central location to explore England in all directions. Central London can be reached in less than 2 hours door to door by train.

20mins into central Nottingham (castle, caves, England's oldest pub, National Museum of Justice, Trent Bridge cricket ground, National Ice Arena, Sherwood Forest - Robin Hood country).

Downstairs: Lounge with wood-burning stove, playroom, conservatory & new kitchen/diner, large glass doors into garden.

Upstairs: 2 x superking/king bedrooms each with en-suite bathrooms, 2 x single bed childrens' rooms each with second 'pull-out' mattresses, 1 x home office, 1 x family bathroom.

4 man tent & all equipment (mattresses, wardrobes, tables, chairs, stove etc) if you fancy camping for a few days.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

We are east of Nottingham, in Upper Saxondale village (c1200 residents) in beautiful peaceful hill-top location. It is a very safe area, especially for young children who like to ride bikes, scoot, play tennis or visit the playpark. A car is required to explore further afield & for grocery shopping.

The villages of Radcliffe-on-Trent & Bingham are 5mins drive which have a variety of shops, supermarkets, pubs & restaurants.

There are many countryside walks around our area along the River Trent, the Grantham Canal, in the Vale of Belvoir and plenty of cosy pubs to stop off at along the way.

Nottingham, to which there are buses every 15mins or you can drive in 20mins, has the oldest pub in England, a castle, caves, National Museum of Justice, the Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery plus strong sporting links with the National Ice Arena, National Watersports Centre, Football, Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, 3 theatres & plenty of multicultural restaurants. There are 2 large golf courses within a 5-10min drive and plenty of local opportunities for horse riding.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

We are ideally placed for many day trips around the UK including getting out into nature, shopping, culture, history or theme-parks.

We regularly travel to central London for work or pleasure- 1hr by train from Grantham, which is 30mins drive from our house.

The countryside around our home is mainly gently rolling farmland; we enjoy countryside walks by the canals & usually start, stop or finish at a country pub! However, more rugged scenery west in the Peak District is easily accessible for a daytrip & we have a range of walks books for all ages & distances within 5-50mins drive.

Our favourite day trips are:

Medieval Lincoln (Castle with one of the original Magnae Cartae, Cathedral, Old Quarter with quirky independent shops & boutiques 40mins drive)

Belton House (a National Trust stately home with gardens, deer park, maze, huge outdoor play park, miniature train) 30mins.

Sherwood Forest for Robin Hood activities & the Major Oak tree, also Go Ape Aerial Adventure course. 30mins

Leicester- King Richard III Visitor Centre, Battle of Bosworth site, National Space Museum- very hands on (great for all ages) & Bradgate Park (great for cycling/hiking/scooting-large herds of deer) 30mins.

Newark- historic town centre with lots of independent shops, cafes, famous for its antiques fair, National Civil War museum, ruined castle 20mins.

York- medieval city, walk the Roman walls, visit the Minster & the fantastic free National Railway Museum- 1hr on train from Newark.

Warwick Castle & Stratford-upon-Avon- birthplace of Shakespeare.(1hr 15mins)

Peak District National Park for hillwalking & traditional towns & villages (1hr+)

National Watersports centre for kayaking, rowing- 5 mins away.

Trent Bridge Cricket Ground- 15mins.

Theme parks; Drayton Manor (including the fabulous Thomasland for young children) or Alton Towers for CBeebiesland each 1hr away. Sundown Adventureland for under 10s.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We would like our guests to feel at home & make full use of the facilities, including the children's toys but would like it to be respected & left clean and tidy. We have two rabbits Peter & Luke who live in the garden in a hutch, they can be looked after elsewhere, or we are happy to leave them if you would like to feed them every day. Our dog will be boarded elsewhere, she is only allowed on the ground floor & never on the furniture.
