Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

We are hoping to exchange our holiday home in Calderdale West Yorkshire with properties in North Island New Zealand which we are visiting in December/January 2019/20. However, we are now looking maybe to have a stopover in Perth, which is a city we have always wanted to visit. We will only require maybe 3/4 days but if a similar short break works for a Perth Homelink member visiting the UK on any dates, please do get in touch. Dyer's Cottage has been occupied by my family for well over 200 years and is a very special place to me. When it came into my possession in 2014, it was in need of extensive modernisation as it still had gas light, no hot water, no bathroom and an extremely basic kitchen. However, there was exposed stone, old wooden ceiling beams, a mullioned window dating from 1650, a beautiful view from the bedroom window and lots of potential to move it out of the 19th century into the 21st. It is now a traditional Yorkshire stone character cottage modernised to the highest of standards with contemporary features. WiFi and a Smart tv with freeview channels, a DVD player and a small library of books will keep you entertained after a day out.The rooms are spacious, the ceilings are high and the sunny garden is a pleasure to relax in. The one bedroom cottage is perfect for 1 or 2 people having a super comfortable superking bed ( 1.80m wide and 2m long ) which can also be configured as 2 long twin beds if preferred. In addition there is a sofabed in the living room and a small single foldaway bed ( 0.80 wide and 1.80 long) and a travel cot. This means that an extra guest can also be accommodated but we do suggest that 3 people plus a baby is the maximum. The cottage is a successful holiday let and you may be interested in looking at the website htpp://www.dyerscottageyorkshire.co.uk
The decoration and furnishings blend traditional style with contemporary comfort and the artwork in the living room has a strong emphasis on the local area. The main feature is the amazing stone fireplace which houses a gas fired stove for additional quick heat although the whole cottage has gas fired central heating and double glazing to give it a cosy feel. The kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven, electric ceramic hob, small dishwasher, fridge with small freezer section, microwave and lots of cooking equipment. The spacious bathroom has pale grey porcelain tiles and a white bath, basin and WC complimented by glossy white cupboards hiding the central heating boiler, the washer/dryer and the airing cupboard. Across the landing with desk is the bedroom with lots of storage. Lie in bed and admire the view across the Calder Valley to Norland. Calderdale features in several UK tv series most notably Last Tango in Halifax, Happy Valley and soon to come Gentleman Jack all of which are filmed locally. Watch out for our neighbouring landmark, Wainhouse Tower, at 77m high the tallest folly in the world. Open on a few days a year, if you are able to climb 400 steps, the views from the balconies at the top are said to be magnificent stretching 50 miles to Blackpool on a clear day. The local dyeworks for which it was designed as a chimney, has long since gone but there are other architectural legacies left by JE Wainhouse in the local area and a copy of the booklet The Wainhouse Trail is available in the cottage as our cottage features within it.The former home of JEW, which is Grade 11 listed, is just a few doors away and is now an award winning local pub serving great beers and home cooked food. The local area is a pleasant residential area with bus services, shops, restaurants and medical services close by although Halifax is only 2 miles away and Sowerby Bridge 1 mile, both of which are thriving 19th century communities with lots of art, culture and musical activities. The magnificent Piece Hall in Halifax, near the railway station, has just reopened after a huge renovation and is now a thriving hub of events, bars, cafes, a museum, tourist information centre and shopping opportunities. Just a 10 minute drive out of town, however, and you are on the moors made famous by local literary authors and poets such as the Bronte sisters of Haworth and more recently Ted Hughes of Mytholmroyd. Explore the many footpaths including the Pennine Way, walk along the canal towpaths of the Rochdale Canal and Hebble and Calder Navigation, just 10 minutes walk from the cottage or take day trips to York, Blackpool, Scarborough, Bradford, Leeds and Manchester. Maybe visit the Yorkshire Dales NP or the Peak District NP? There's just so much to do. Local markets are held regularly and a visit to the antique shops of nearby quirky Hebden Bridge is a must.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our neighbourhood is on a local history trail which takes place a few times a year. Originally a sheep farming area on the side of the Calder Valley, in the 19th century the Wainhouse family developed a dyeworks to colour the locally produced woolen cloth and the cottages nearby were rented to the Master Dyers, of which occupation my ancestors followed over a few generations. Our cottage is one of the oldest in the area and was originally a farmhouse. It got subdivided into 5 cottages at some point in the past and then around 1870 the distinctive 'Wainhouse' porches were added. The area is built on a hill side so there are lots of rambling footpaths and steps to explore so this is not an area to live in if you are less than nimble on your feet. Steps lead up our path from the road and the staircase to the bedroom and bathroom is quite steep and not quite regular.
A bus passes the gate every hour but there are more frequent ones either from the end of the road or from the shopping street higher up the hill at King Cross. Here there is a large supermarket with an ATM, a minimarket also with ATM, a doctors, bakery and many other shops and services including St Paul's church, pubs, restaurants and takeaways.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Our cottage is actually featured in an episode of Happy Valley and Calderdale is now becoming famous as a media tourist destination with tourists coming to identify landmarks and scenery they may have seen in Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax and soon to come Gentleman Jack.
Take a trip to the magnificent Piece Hall and Bankfield Museum in Halifax and have a tour of Shibden Hall and its amazing grounds where Anne Lister ( Gentleman Jack) lived.
Just half an hour over the moors is Haworth, home of the Brontes and also on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway which sometimes runs steam trains on this tourist line, made famous in the classic film The Railway Children.
Visit the Jacobean house East Riddlesden Hall or Skipton Castle or walk across Ilkley Moor of the famous song.
Visit both the Yorkshire Dales NP and the Peak District NP and don't forget the Yorkshire Sculpture Museum, Saltaire with its David Hockney connections and the National Media Museum in Bradford. Halifax has a very special hands on museum for children called Eureka! and York has the National Railways Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre.
Halifax is equidistant between the Lancashire coast and the Yorkshire coast and trains take about 2 hours. Manchester is less than an hour away too.
This is the place for you if you enjoy history, art, culture, music, walking and exploring!

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

The cottage sleeps a maximum of 3 adults and a baby. Smoking is not allowed in the property but is OK outside. The cottage will be immaculately prepared for your arrival with linen and towels provided and it is expected that it will be left equally clean and tidy. Our housekeeper will arrange for the laundry to be done after your stay. If you damage an item or cause any damage to services such as a drains blockage, it is expected that you organise and pay for the problem to be rectified. Pets are not allowed. Please be aware that our neighbours are our friends and be careful of making noise after 22.00. The property must only be occupied by the person arranging the swap. Sub letting is not allowed. We may have a small quite elderly car which may be available if it passes its next annual check but it is only suitable for local trips and we would not suggest going near a motorway.
