Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

Relax on the deck and watch the ships and boats in Tasman Bay or get active with some of the many activities, such as, mountain biking, hiking, golf, kayaking, fishing, wind surfing, etc. etc.
Nelson prides itself on good food, wine, scenery, arts and culture.

Our 270-sq metre (approx. 3000sq feet) home in Atawhai, just 4kms from Nelson CBD, was built in 2001 and has been extensively modernised since then. Whilst it is well-appointed and has some of the best sea views in Nelson it is not Homes & Gardens-style flashy.

The kitchen, dining and family room are open plan and all have excellent sea views, as does the main lounge which has a modern gas fire and heat pump to make it cosy in winter. The rest of the house is heated, or cooled, by air conditioning. Ample decking and outdoor-living with garden furniture, shade cloth and Weber barbecue.

The house has four bedrooms but only two (both with Queen-sized beds) are available. Each bedroom has its own large en-suite and there's a third bathroom with spa bath.

Wi-Fi is available and there is a good cellphone signal for most networks. The car (available with the exchange) is an automatic 2016 4x4 Nissan X-Trail. We would prefer the car not to be used for long touring journeys and kept within the Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough region. This is basically the top quarter of the South Island so gives you plenty of scope for day trips.

The house is set in half an acre of garden and has superb, un-interrupted views across Tasman Bay to the Western Ranges, taking-in Port Nelson, the historic lighthouse (1862) and the Boulder Bank - one of the longest naturally-formed spits in the world, measuring 13kms.

You will be relieved to know you are not expected to maintain the garden, although there may be the need to water some parts occasionally. You are very welcome to help yourself to fruit and veg.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our house is in a quiet suburban cul-de-sac and built on a hillside overlooking Tasman Bay and the Nelson Boulder Bank with the Western Ranges in the distance. There is an excellent cycle and walking track at the bottom of the hill taking you along the waterfront to the centre of Nelson, approx. 4kms. Bicycle hire is available. There is also a bus route within walking distance, but it is a climb back up the hill!
Countless restaurants and cafes within a 10km radius of the house, including wineries and boutique pubs. Nelson has a reputation for excellent micro breweries that use locally-grown hops, as well as the award-winning wineries in the surrounding vineyards.
Nelson is New Zealand's largest commercial fishing port and consequently we have an abundance of fresh local fish suppliers and restaurants.
Local produce is available at Nelson's fantastic Saturday Market. You must visit this market for arts, crafts, fresh veg, cheese, Manuka honey, olive oil and souvenirs. There is something for everyone and it's full of colourful characters. There's also a Farmer's Market on Wednesday mornings.
You haven't tasted decent coffee until you've tried coffee at any one of our numerous cafes.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Nelson is served by a busy regional airport (no international flights) just 20 mins drive away. Flights from Nelson to Wellington take approx. 20mins. Flights to Christchurch approx. 45mins, Auckland approx. 1 hour 20mins. Queenstown involves a change of plane at Christchurch.

There is a lengthy cycle network (Great Taste Cycle Trail) across the Nelson/Tasman region, world-class mountain bike trails, a large, safe and sandy beach, golf courses, tennis courts, croquet, bowls, swimming pool, kayaking, wind-surfing, sail-boarding, paddle-boarding, sailing, fishing, etc, all within ten minutes of the house and hang-gliding, sky-diving, micro-light flying, private piloting (both helicopter and light aircraft), horse riding, quad bike riding, Flying Fox etc. - all within half an hour of the house.

There is a winter ski-field (Rainbow Ski Field) two hours away. A shuttle bus service is provided from Nelson.

You can choose a different golf course for every day of the week and follow-up your game with lunch at a different café or restaurant for every day of the month. Not to mention the wineries. The Nelson region produces some of the finest, award-winning wines, as does neighbouring Marlborough.

Three of New Zealand's most beautiful National Parks are easily accessed from Nelson. The Abel Tasman National Park is renowned for its golden beaches, sculptured granite cliffs and world-famous Abel Tasman Coast Track. The Kahurangi NP is more rugged but has a network of tracks allowing you to explore wild rivers, high plateaux, alpine herbfields and coastal forests. Nelson Lakes NP offers tranquil beech forest, craggy mountains, clear streams and lakes both big and small.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We have a 2016 Nissan X-Trail 4x4 (automatic) available for your use within the Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough region. That's approximately the top quarter of the South Island, up to Golden Bay (Abel Tasman National Park), down to Murchison (for fly fishing) and over the mountains to the Marlborough Sounds, Picton, Blenheim and the vineyards. We would prefer it is not taken out of these regions and not used off-road. Gravel roads are OK.
There are several bike hire companies in and around Nelson for you to take advantage of the cycle tracks, however we would prefer that bikes are not carried in our car.
We have a vegetable garden from which you are very welcome to take produce. There is an automatic irrigation system but it would be appreciated if you could water a few small areas where the irrigation does not reach and our few (probably just 3) indoor plants. Lawns will be mown by a gardener.
While we do not have any pets, we are cat lovers and would be more than happy to provide food and love to your cat.
No wild parties - at least, not unless we are invited!
