We are Wendy and David; an active, retired couple having both enjoyed careers as teachers and subsequently as Avocado farmers. We have two adult daughters, both back in Australia now after living overseas for some years and two gorgeous grandchildren who often tempt us to Canberra rather than Paris, London or Rome. We moved to the lovely small beachside enclave that is Fern Beach 10 years ago and still love our 'beach holiday' and the many opportunities for adventure that camping and home exchange offer us.
We have been members of 'homelink' on and off since 2004 and have made many wonderful friends and successful exchanges over the years. We took a short break from our membership in 2014/15 before joining again later that year. We look forward to continuing our travels and enjoying the friendships that we find along the way.

Description of the home we are offering for exchange
** WE ARE NOT LOOKING TO EXCHANGE TO THE UK IN 2024**
Our home is in subtropical northern New South Wales, a delightful area of outstanding natural beauty.
We have a very comfortable contemporary beach house at Fern Beach just a level 200 metre walk through natural bushland reserve to the surf. It is a two storey home with main bedroom, ensuite, kitchen, living, dining etc upstairs and three decks with barbeque/outdoor settings from which to choose. Downstairs there are two more bedrooms, bathroom and second living area, also with an outdoor terrace. There is plenty of natural light in every room and a peaceful ambience of ‘indoor/outdoor living’. Ceiling fans and coastal breezes keep the house pleasantly cool.
Our beach overlooks Byron Bay (Australia's most easterly point) to the south and is bordered by the beautiful Brunswick estuary whilst northwards it joins the delightful Tweed coast. We are 1 1/2 hrs. south of Brisbane and a 1/2 hr sth of the Queensland Gold Coast (both with airports). All destinations are easily accessible from our area and there is a Sat/Nav available in the car (A late model automatic Mazda 3.)
Byron Shire has a particularly diverse and interesting local culture with many Music, Arts and Literary events throughout the year. Also there are many outdoor activities and attractions to enjoy, including sea kayaking with the Dolphins, surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, sky diving and hot air ballooning.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
We live in a very quiet cul-de-sac directly behind the beach and reserve. Our neighbourhood is particularly welcoming with a lovely spirit of community. There is a small park and free neighbourhood tennis court 50 metres from our front door and next to the beach access 'boardwalk'. The Country Club with excellent Golf course and Bowling greens is a 5 minute drive and the local shops just 2 minutes further.
Byron Bay, famous for it's beauty and water sports; surfing, diving and kayaking with the Dolphins, Whale watching and panoramic coastline is just twenty minutes by car and a fifteen km walk along the beach. The small and very popular village of Brunswick Heads, with it's delightful river and estuary is our nearest 'go to' for fishing but we are spoilt for choices of swim spots with the beach in front, the river behind and nearby and so many 'favourites' for swimming and walking, all within a 'stone's throw' of home. The nearby hinterland offers quite a different experience with tropical rainforests, wildlife, ancient volcanic Caldera landscape and amazing views. Our local area does offer a great diversity of natural, cultural, sporting and creative attractions ...but also simply the peace of a gentle neighbourhood with every possibility at your doorstep.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
From our house, it’s a short walk along the beach [or street] to our local corner shop and cafe [very good], with another popular venue ‘The Yum Yum Tree’ just a little further at New Brighton [also very good]. Our closest seaside village Brunswick Heads, is excellent for shopping, coffee, dining, fresh prawns off the boat and of course swimming, kayaking, paddling and fishing.. a beautiful spot 5 minutes by car. Mullumbimby is also a very popular little town with an interesting and diverse ‘vibe’ that is also showcased in the many unusual shops, cafe’s, restaurants and markets. Byron Bay is 20 minutes from us and offers every experience a visitor could wish ..however the best thing about the Bay is it’s own natural beauty!
