From our house it is a twenty minute drive into the centre of York with all its famous attractions. There is a Park and Ride site for the city ten minutes away or a bus service stopping outside the house which goes into the city centre hourly. York is famed for its Minster, the largest Gothic Cathedral in Europe, The National Railway Museum, The Jorvik Viking Centre and the City Walls. There are many museums, theatres and a huge range of entertainment and leisure/dining and shopping opportunities.
The coast is just over an hour away over the North York Moors, passing through Helmsley and Pickering, on the way to resorts such as Scarborough, Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay. Harrogate and The Yorkshire Dales are half an hour to the West with Ilkley and Skipton about an hour away. For enthusiastic cyclists, bringing their own bikes, there are miles and miles of routes in the area. The majority of traffic passing our house in the Spring and Summer are cyclists.
There are a number of historic houses and gardens in the area, including Castle Howard, Newby Hall, Duncombe Park and Harewood House. The nearest National Trust property, Beningbrough Hall, is about four miles from our house. Nunnington Hall and Fountains Abbey are a short drive away. English Heritage properties include Helmsley Castle, Pickering Castle, Clifford's Tower, Rievaulx Abbey, Byland Abbey and Whitby Abbey.
